Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 17 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (26.6 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Het scherm vertoonde trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.9 (minimum) tot 636 (maximum) ms. » 42 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (42.7 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 20830 Hz90 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 20830 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 90 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 20830 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 56 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 7470 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

U-klasse ULV CPU's en mobiele werkstations - dat gaat niet samen. Daar zit wellicht verandering in met de komst van de nieuwe Kaby Lake-R ULV quad-core processoren. Echter, deze componenten zijn nog niet verkrijgbaar en we testen geen imaginaire ZBook 15u G5 maar de Kaby Lake dual-core ZBook 15u G4.

De G4 heeft een degelijke basis. De stevige en hoogwaardige behuizing bevat invoerapparaten die, hoewel ze niet de beste zijn, geschikt zijn voor een werkpaard zoals deze. Het brede aanbod van poorten met onder andere VGA en een volledige grootte DisplayPort bevalt ons goed, evenals het heldere IPS beeldscherm (300 nits). Vergeleken met de HP EliteBook 850 G4 is het een wereld van verschil.

Ons grootste punt van kritiek wat betreft het beeldscherm is dat de kleurreproductie tekortschiet voor professioneel gebruik. Ook hadden we graag een Thunderbolt 3 poort gezien - eerlijk gezegd verwachten we dit bij een notebook in deze prijsklasse. Vooral de CPU en GPU baren ons zorgen. Beide presteren maximaal en blijven zeer stil, maar zijn simpelweg niet krachtig genoeg voor een modern werkstation. Dit wordt al duidelijk wanneer we kijken naar AMD FirePro GPU, waarvan de productie volgens ons al een lange tijd geleden gestaakt kon worden. Een instapmodel Quadro GPU zoals de M520 of M620 was in onze ogen een betere keuze geweest. Tenslotte zijn we niet tevreden over de hoge oppervlaktetemperaturen en de overduidelijk te zwakke oplader.

Gemengde gevoelens: de ZBook 15u G4 heeft veel potentie, maar wordt belemmerd door de hopeloos verouderde GPU.

De vraag is welke gebruiker HP in gedachten heeft voor de ZBook 15u G4. Veeleisende gebruikers zullen kiezen voor krachtigere alternatieven zoals de Dell Precision 5520, de Apple MacBook Pro 15 of zelfs HP's eigen ZBook Studio G4. Aangezien die modellen een grotere batterij bevatten zijn ook de looptijden langer. De G4 is niet de beste keuze als je zoekt naar een betaalbaar, energiezuinig werkstation voor alledaagse take - Lenovo's ThinkPad P51s heeft misschien geen metalen behuizing, maar kan met de optionele 6-cel batterij langer zonder stopcontact. Ook bevat dat apparaat een Thunderbolt 3 poort en snellere Quadro M520 GPU.

Alles bij elkaar concluderen we dat hoewel de ZBook 15u G4 een degelijke laptop is, het andere mobiele werkstations niet kan bijhouden. Wellicht dat het model van volgend jaar met nieuwe CPU en GPU het beter doet.
