Kort testrapport Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 G732LXS laptop: Koploper

Sportwagen met handrem aan. Hoewel veel high-end laptops nogal discreet zijn ontworpen, is de Strix Scar 17 visueel duidelijk gericht op gamers. Het geteste model, G732LXS, kan pronken met de momenteel sterkste notebook-GPU van Nvidia. Asus heeft echter gekozen voor de zwakste TGP-versie van de RTX 2080 Super.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Ter vergelijking: 51 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17886 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 2500000) Hz waargenomen.

De Asus Strix Scar 17 G732LXS is een extreem krachtige high-end laptop, die helaas lijdt aan de typische zwakke punten van deze categorie.

Naast de warmteontwikkeling is het geluidsniveau bij 3D-werking ook erg hoog. Bovendien heeft de grafische kaart slechts in beperkte mate de "Super" -aanduiding verdiend bij het vergelijken van de prestaties met andere RTX 2080-laptops (sleutelwoord: TGP). Asus kan ook de connectiviteit verbeteren (geen kaartlezer, geen Thunderbolt 3).

Anders vonden we de 17-incher goed bevallen. De Scar 17 loopt voor op de meeste concurrenten op het gebied van beeldscherm (300 Hz!), invoerapparaten, geluid en batterijduur. Gezien de prijs-prestatieverhouding raden we echter een goedkoper model aan met een Core i7-10875H en GeForce RTX 2070 (Super), die waarschijnlijk ook koeler en stiller blijft.
