We hebben de nieuwe Dell XPS 13 ervaren als een mooie en bovendien hele fijne 2-in-1 laptop. Alles werkt licht, ontspannen en bovendien zeer comfortabel. Het beeldscherm tovert een scherp, levendig plaatje en presteert hier op een beter niveau dan menig concurrent. De XPS heeft voldoende aansluitingen en Dell levert bovendien ook nog een adapter mee. Wil je desondanks nog meer, of kies je graag voor een aanvullende verzekering, dan verzorgt de fabrikant dit gewoon; vink alles aan wat je belangrijk vindt aan en de fabrikant levert de XPS vervolgens keurig bij je thuis af.

Dells XPS 13 is een bijzonder solide aanvoelende laptop met een compacte omvang dankzij zijn dunne schermranden. Het scherm heeft een goed contrast, maar ook een automatisch dimmende backlight, die storend kan zijn. De accuduur bedraagt bijna twaalf uur tijdens browsen en zelfs dertieneneenhalf uur bij het kijken van video. Een vingerafdrukscanner is standaard niet aanwezig, maar voor twee tientjes extra bouwt Dell hem voor je in. Voor al dat moois betaal je relatief gezien wel een flinke duit.

Dell is er op het eerste gezicht uitstekend in geslaagd om een 2-in-1-versie van zijn XPS 13 te maken, zonder daarbij veel concessies te doen. De keuze voor een processor met een lager verbruik maakt passieve koeling mogelijk en dat is voor een apparaat dat ook als tablet gebruikt kan worden wel zo prettig. Verder heeft Dell alle goede eigenschappen van de XPS 13 weten te behouden. Zo is er het 13"-scherm met smalle schermranden, het toetsenbord dat prettig tikt en een stevige, maar lichte aluminium behuizing. Waar we minder van gecharmeerd zijn is de meerprijs ten opzichte van de gewone XPS 13 met Kaby Lake-processor. De vanafprijs is 150 euro hoger en in de goedkoopste versie van 1399 euro zit slechts 4GB ram, terwijl je bij de reguliere laptop 8GB ram krijgt. Een meerprijs voor de tabletfunctionaliteit is wat ons betreft gerechtvaardigd, maar het is jammer dat er bezuinigd wordt op het geheugen.

This Dell 2-in-1 hits all the right notes, but its biggest struggle isn't against its own kin—it's against its excellent competition. Namely, one really great HP 2-in-1: the HP Spectre X360. HP's best comes in a prettier package, has a webcam that's in the right spot, and even packs fully-powered Intel chips inside, making it faster. Oh, and it's cheaper; the Spectre I reviewed with an Intel i7 chip, 8 GB RAM, and a 256 GB SSD rings the till at $140 less than the Dell. Very recently, HP even announced models with pen compatibility and even 4K displays, even further chipping away at the Dell's strong suits.

Even then, the Spectre x360 machine is only 0.8 inch deeper front-to-back. It’s has XPS 13 in the name, but this is a very different laptop to the standard XPS 13. It’s less powerful, but lighter and should have better battery life. It’s a case of horses for courses: if thin and light is your priority and you won’t be doing much in the way of intense multimedia work, it’s very attractive. Still, the regular model will always be better value for those who don’t want a 2-in-1 design.

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

13.30": Dit schermformaat wordt vooral gebruikt voor subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles. Voor alle drie types is dit formaat redelijk groot. De grootste verscheidenheid aan subnotebooks wordt vertegenwoordigd in deze klasse.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.
