90% Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 2025 Review: Powerful and Flashy

If you've got the money, I'd recommend buying the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 for its excellent performance and cooling, flashy gamer-approved design, and the bright Mini LED display. The laptop also has a nice keyboard and a large touchpad. The tool-less rear panel is also quite useful and something other laptop manufacturers should adopt. The only downside, albeit minor, is the use of PCIe Gen 4 storage, particularly when the laptop supports Gen 5 SSDs. The ROG Strix Scar 16 can easily replace your gaming desktop and add some portability to the mix. Of course, a gaming desktop offers better upgradeability, but does it have AniMe Vision? The laptop is definitely worth the price tag.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 is the rarified sort of gaming machine that has to be superb just to justify the $3,000-plus price. Models like this one also face the stiffest competition imaginable. Even when stacked against top performers like the MSI Raider 18 HX AI—which we called "the King Kong of gaming laptops”—it holds its own, thanks to a stunningly capable Intel Core Ultra 9 processor and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 GPU that deliver top-tier performance. The 16-inch ROG Nebula Display HDR display produces brilliant visuals with a high refresh rate, excellent brightness, and deep contrast. The laptop’s battery life was hours more than expected, and the cooling system checks the box for every major thermal innovation in the last decade. Oh, and the tool-free upgrades for SSD and RAM are a sweet touch.

Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 and 18 finally convinced me to like gaming laptops

Ultimately, I think both of the Strix Scar laptops I tested are worthwhile investments for those who want the ultimate all-in-one computer for gaming and everything else and are willing to pay a premium for it. The Strix Scar series doesn’t come cheap, with the Scar 16 ranging from $4,199 to $6,699 and the Scar 18 ranging from $4,499 to $6,999. (The Scar 16 config I tried wasn’t listed on Asus’ website, but the closest version was $4,999. Meanwhile, the Scar 18 config I tested was priced at $6,999.) That’s a ton of money to put down for a PC, but it’s also in line with similarly specced laptops from other brands and even some desktop options. For anyone who doesn’t want to drop around $5,000 on a desktop and another roughly $1,000 on a laptop or tablet for portable computing needs, gaming laptops like the Strix Scar are the obvious way to go, and that’s before getting into the cheaper options with lower-tier or older hardware.

Priced at Rs. 3,79,990, the Asus ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2025) is every bit the performance powerhouse it promises to be. With an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5080 GPU under the hood, it delivers near desktop-level performance in a portable (albeit heavy) package. The Mini LED display is stunning, the keyboard is a joy to use, and the overall thermal and build design is rock solid. That said, it's not perfect. The use of a Gen4 SSD at this price point feels like a missed opportunity, especially when the competition offers faster Gen5 storage. Battery life is limited, fan profiling could be slightly tweaked, and NVIDIA's Optimus tech could use some more work. Still, that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a seriously capable machine, not just for gaming, but for content creation, multitasking, and everything in between.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 is a solid 16-inch gaming laptop for shoppers looking to snag Nvidia’s mobile RTX 5080. Nvidia’s GPU performs quite well here, only slightly lagging the performance of larger 18-inch systems. It’s a similar story for the Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX CPU, which, though a step down from the 285Hx, is still extremely fast in any multi-core test. Asus’ design is an advantage as well, with an attractive “AniMe Matrix” display across the laptop’s lid and decent build quality. On the downside, the laptop’s battery life wasn’t great despite the inclusion of Nvidia Optimus to switch off the GPU in some situations. I also think the placement of the physical ports, which line the sides of the laptop, is inconvenient. Priced at $3,299.99, the Scar 16’s pricing is mid-pack among its direct competitors, though most land within a couple hundred dollars.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 16 is the smaller variant of the Scar 18, with similar features, design quirks and specs, but in a more compact and lightweight chassis. It runs at higher internal temperatures as a result, but doesn't sacrifice performance or capabilities in any way. And the RTX 5080 configuration tested here is better value for your money than the RTX 5090 model, although still expensive. But at the end of the day, choosing this over other options in its space will probably come down to the screen, as this is one of the few to offer a modern matte mini LED display and latest-gen specs.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is een grote Taiwanese fabrikant van computerhardware gevestigd in Taipei, opgericht in 1989. Onder de merknaam Asus produceert het bedrijf een breed scala aan producten, waaronder laptops, desktops, moederborden, grafische kaarten, monitoren, smartphones en netwerkapparatuur, complete systemen en pc-onderdelen voor eindgebruikers.

Onder de merknaam ROG (Republic of Gamers) produceert ASUS gaming laptops die bij gamers bekend staan om hun krachtige specificaties, speciale grafische kaarten, schermen met hoge verversingssnelheid en geavanceerde koelsystemen.

Naast gaming wordt een breed scala aan notebooks aangeboden voor verschillende behoeften en budgetten, van ultraslanke en lichtgewicht ultrabooks tot veelzijdige 2-in-1 convertibles en budgetvriendelijke opties. In 2023 had Asus wereldwijd een marktaandeel van 7% op de pc-markt.

De klanttevredenheid over ASUS-notebooks heeft betrekking op de prestaties, de functies en de goede prijs-prestatieverhouding van ASUS-notebooks. Zoals bij elk merk zijn er echter af en toe meldingen van problemen zoals oververhitting, drivercompatibiliteit of problemen met de bouwkwaliteit.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden de meeste moderne spellen op een hoge resolutie en hoge details moeten kunnen draaien (enkele uitzonderingen zijn mogelijk).

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop: De GeForce RTX 5090 Mobile maakt gebruik van de GB203-chip en gebruikt 10.496 shaders / CUDA-kernen van de maximale 10.752 die de chip heeft. Hierdoor lijkt de RTX 5090 Laptop meer op de RTX 5080 desktop variant (zelfde chip) dan de Desktop RTX 5090 met 20.760 cores en hogere kloksnelheden.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop: Een snelle grafische kaart uit de Blackwell-familie voor laptops die is gebaseerd op de GB203-chip en gebruik maakt van 8.192 shaders en 16 GB GDDR7 grafisch geheugen (256-bits grafische bus).

Intel Arrow Lake:

Ultra 9 275HX: Mobiele high-end CPU voor gaming notebooks gebaseerd op de Arrow Lake architectuur. Biedt 24 cores, bestaande uit 8 snelle cores met een kloksnelheid tot 5,4 GHz en 16 kleinere efficiënte cores met een kloksnelheid tot 4,6 GHz. De CPU heeft toegang tot 40 MB L2 cache en 36 MB L3 cache en heeft een TDP van 55 watt. De SoC bevat een kleine speciale NPU genaamd AI Boost met 13 TOPS (Int8) en ondersteunt optioneel vPro Essentials.
