In this price bracket the big players this year seem to be the Toshiba Satellite A210/A200, Dell Vostro 1000 and Acer Aspire 47xx and 55xx Gemstone series. All are good choices. Where I see the Toshiba having an edge over the Vostro 1000 is in the buyer's ability to walk into a store and touch/feel the notebook. Things like keyboard and design are very personal and hard to convey in a small web photograph. Aesthetically the Toshiba is better looking in my opinion. The Vostro can be bought with Windows XP - a vastly superior Operating System for PCs with modest specification like these. The Dell has a more orthodox keyboard layout - for a lot of people this alone could be the clincher. It also comes with a smaller 120GB HDD, but is spins faster. Comparing the A210 to Acer's Aspire, I again think the chassis is nicer on the Toshiba. The two Acer notebooks I found at this price both had Celeron CPUs - one was spec'ed with 512MB RAM and an 80GB HDD. So the Toshiba has an edge in terms of performance and specifications.

Toshiba's Satellite range of notebooks has undergone a refresh recently, with several new series of models added to the range. One of these is the A210 series, a stylish range of laptops aimed at the home user. Our review sample, the 12U, sits in the middle of a four-model family. Despite the sub-£500 price tag, the A210-12U is a well built, stylish looking notebook in its gloss, metallic, onyx blue and silver finish, set off nicely by blue, back-lit system indicators and a back-lit Satellite logo. At the heart of the A210-12U sits a dual core AMD Turion X2 TL-52 processor which is clocked at 1.60GHz with an 800MHz FSB and 1MB L2 cache. Backing this up is an ATI RS690M/SB600 chipset combination and 2GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory, which is an impressive amount given the price tag. All of which gives the A210-12U no more than average performance, but it's sufficient for most office applications, although you may find it struggling a bit when it comes to something like picture or video manipulation.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is een Japans conglomeraat of technologiegroep. Het bedrijf werd opgericht in 1939 en in 1978 werd Toshiba de officiële bedrijfsnaam. De producten en diensten van het bedrijf omvatten energie, industriële en sociale infrastructuursystemen, liften en roltrappen, elektronische componenten, halfgeleiders, harde schijven, printers, batterijen, verlichting, logistiek en informatietechnologie. Toshiba was een van de grootste fabrikanten van personal computers, consumentenelektronica, huishoudelijke apparaten en medische apparatuur.

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 is een DirectX 10 grafische kaart van ATI en directe concurrent van de NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS grafische kaart voor laptops. Dit zou betekenen dat de kaart in staat is om alle moderne spellen in gemiddelde resolutie en zonder Antialiasing zonder bewegingsonderbrekingen weer te geven.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400: Dit is een DirectX 10 grafische kaart van ATI en de directe concurrent van de NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS grafische kaart voor laptops. Dit zou betekenen dat de kaart in staat is om alle moderne spellen in gemiddelde resolutie en zonder Antialiasing weer te geven zonder bewegingsonderbrekingen.

Deze grafische kaarten voor notebooks zijn niet bruikbaar voor games. Als ze al games kunnen draaien, dan doen ze dat met grafische afwijkingen en heel lage framesnelheid. Voor gamers zijn deze chips ongeschikt! Kantoor en internet taken zijn, daarentegen, geen probleem voor deze GPUs.

ATI Radeon Xpress X1200: Dit is een onboard video chip en volgens AMD geoptimaliseerd voor een goede prijs/kwaliteit verhouding.  Hij is gebaseerd op een X700 ontwerp maar met minder pixel- en vertex-pipelines. ATI Radeon Xpress X1200 is nauwelijks geschikt voor spelers. Alleen oude spellen zoals Quake 3 Arena kan vloeiend gespeeld worden in 1024x768 met hoge/medium details. Zelfs Warcraft 3 draait vloeiend met minimum details. Huidige veeleisende spellen als FEAR, Doom3 en Quake 4 kunnen nauwelijks gespeeld worden. Een aantal strategiespellen als Age of Empires 3 kan alleen gespeeld worden met minimale details.

AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2 is bedoeld geplaatst te worden tegen de Intel Core Duo en werd op 17 mei 2006 op de markt gebracht. Het stroomverbruik is niet hoger dan bij de Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 met ATI Xpress en Mobility Radeon X300). Dit betekent dat ongeveer de zelfde batterijduur en fangedrag verwacht kan worden (met deze chipset). Echter, de prestatie was 20% lager dan die van de T2300 (1.66 GHz) vanwege de lagere L2 Cache (Core Duo heeft 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Toch, de prestatie is voldoende.

TL-62: Op 65nm geproduceerde dual-core processor gebaseerd op de K8 core. Vergelijkbare prestaties met een 1,9 GHz Core Duo CPU met 1MB Level 2 Cache (Celeron Dual Core bijv).
