The Sony VAIO FZ is the latest family of sleek, solid performance notebooks from Sony. With available Blu-ray disc drive, available HDMI video output, a reasonably tough build, clean looks, and enough processing muscle to handle a variety of needs, the VAIO FZ promises to be your mobile entertainment solution. The VAIO FZ is available with a full range of Core 2 Duo processors (from the Intel T7100 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo up to the T7700 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo). The only screen offering is the 15.4" WXGA but the notebook can take up to 4GB of RAM. Built-in wireless 802.11 a/b/g/n is standard. Battery life on the FZ was far from impressive. Even with the screen brightness set to less than half, wireless on, and Vista power settings set to maximize battery life, the FZ powered down in less than 3 hours (2 hours and 52 minutes). While I'm sure it's possible to get more battery life by turning the screen brightness all the way down and turning off the wireless, this isn't particularly useful for a modern notebook.

Yes, the FZ18 is the latest effort in Sony's grand plan to push high-definition video into your living room (or in this case, on to your desk). GOOD SCREEN: The FZ18 has a good LCD monitor. Inset: The noteboik comes in a nice twotone finish. The notebook also comes with a required software (InterVideo WinDVD BD edition) to play Blu-ray movies and even has an HDMI port for connecting it to your big-screen LCD TV.
It's not just about watching, though – the FZ18's Blu-ray drive is also a writer, which means that you can author your own high-definition home videos (assuming you've also got a HD camcorder) onto writeable Blu-ray discs.

As a desktop replacement that can act as an office workhorse, or as a mini home cinema, the Sony represents great value for money. With Blu-ray and one of the clearest screens we've seen on a laptop, the VAIO is a great-value option.

Deze krachtige componenten zijn geplaatst in een stylistische behuizing, die gemaakt is van magnesium onderdelen.

Sony: Sony Corporation is een van de grootste Japanse elektronicabedrijven. Het bedrijf werd in 1946 opgericht onder een andere naam en produceerde aanvankelijk rijstkokers. Het bedrijf lanceerde de eerste transistorradio. In 1958 werd het bedrijf omgedoopt tot Sony. Sony is een combinatie van het Latijnse woord sonus (geluid) en het Engelse woord sonny (kleine jongen). Tegenwoordig is de core business consumentenelektronica. Het bedrijf houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling, het ontwerp, de fabricage en de verkoop van elektronische apparatuur, instrumenten, apparaten, gameconsoles en software. Sony is actief in de volgende segmenten: gaming- en netwerkdiensten, muziek, afbeeldingen, home entertainment en geluid, beeldproducten en -oplossingen, mobiele communicatie, halfgeleiders, financiële diensten en andere.
Deze grafische kaarten voor notebooks zijn niet bruikbaar voor games. Als ze al games kunnen draaien, dan doen ze dat met grafische afwijkingen en heel lage framesnelheid. Voor gamers zijn deze chips ongeschikt! Kantoor en internet taken zijn, daarentegen, geen probleem voor deze GPUs.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is een geïntegreerde (onboard) grafische chip op een Mobile Intel 965GM chipset (voor Merom = Core 2 architectuur). Dit is de opvolger van de GMA 950. De integratie van de volledig programmeerbare pipeline is het interessantste hieraan. Vanwege de integratie van de DirectX9 features, HDR en Hardware Transform & Lighning (T&L) – voorgangers hadden alleen Software T&L – zou hij geschikt moeten zijn voor Windows Vista Premium (ondersteunt Aero Glass volledig). Volgens de gegevens zou de prestatie beduidend beter moeten zijn dan de GMA 950.
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT: NVidia GeForce 8400M GT is de capabele opvolger van DirectX 10 van de GeForce 7400 voor laptops en technologisch een langzamere 8600M GS video kaart. De prestatie is een tikje boven die van de 7400 waardoor hij de huidige spellen vloeiend kan weergeven met verminderde details / resoluties. Voor mensen die slechts af en toe spelen, kan deze voldoende zijn.
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS is de capabele opvolger van de DirectX 10 van de GeForce G 7600/7700 voor laptops. De prestatie is een tikje boven die van de 7600 / 7700 en daardoor kan deze huidige spellen vloeiend weergeven. 8600M is één van de eerste laptop-GPUs, die DirectX 10 ondersteunt en de H.264-decoding versnelt van de HD-films.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.
T7500: De Core 2 Duo T7500 is een Merom Core 2 Duo met 4MB Level 2 cache. Hij zit het middensegment (2009) en presteert vergelijkbaar met een moderne P7550 of Turion II Ultra M640/M660.
T8300: De Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 was op het moment van aankondiging een snelle dual-core CPU voor laptops met 3 MB level 2 cache.
