De X1 Carbon kon wel een vernieuwing gebruiken. Het scherm, de processor, het design: het waren punten waarop Lenovo's ultrabook uit 2013 begon achter te lopen op de concurrentie. Met de 2014-versie heb je een lichter en makkelijker mee te nemen uitvoering, die met de i7-processor en het 2560 x 1440 scherm de voorloper overtreft. Echt revolutionair zijn de veranderingen niet en dat doet de vragen rijzen of de Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon (2014) wel zo'n goede koop is. Voor een dergelijke prijs mag je verwachten dat alles klopt, en dat is door de accuduur, het missen van een sd-kaartlezer en een ietwat vreemde lay-out van het toetsenbord toch niet helemaal het geval.

The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon isn't the right laptop for everyone. If you want to look cool in Starbucks, are out to spend as little as possible or want to play games, you're probably in the wrong place (although the X1 Carbon will breeze through any tasks you throw at it). However, there are few laptops this portable that you can spec out so comprehensively. While you wouldn't think it from first glance, this laptop is as portable as a 13-inch MacBook Air, but as equipped as a Pro, while offering connectivity options you can't get with 95 per cent of ultra-portable laptops.

The Lenovo X1 Carbon is a great computer for those who seek a laptop that is very durable, productive and comfortable at the same time. I have used it for months during trade shows in many parts of the world, and this computer still looks brand new without visible scratches on the soft skin. I haven’t spilled any liquid on it, but even if I did, it should have survived just fine. The X1 Carbon proves that toughness does not mean “bulky”. In fact, this is the lightest 14” computer that I know of, and this is a very good thing when I need a larger monitor for development because each additional inch provide precious additional visual comfort.

The Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon hasn’t changed much from the older model, and while the addition of a touchscreen and higher resolution display are nice to have, it’s not a bona-fide reason to upgrade. What’s worth keeping in mind is the battery life is a concern, and the keyboard tweaks might not be to everyone’s liking when you actually being using it. But for a well-built, thin, lightweight, and durable laptop, no Windows laptop even comes remotely close.

It has perfect finish, it's lightweight and remarkable thin for a 14" model, and the keyboard and touchpad are easily the best we've reviewed to date. There are few minor drawbacks, however, some of which are rather astonishing, such as the lack of an SD card reader.

The 2014 Lenovo X1 Carbon is a very expensive notebook, but I think its robust construction, high-res display, innovative feature set, and real-world performance justify its price tag. The previous model was great, and Lenovo significantly raised the bar by adding new I/O ports and an innovative adaptive function row (although that takes some getting used to). Bottom line: The X1 Carbon was and is a great computer. Last year, I convinced IDG to buy me the 2013 touchscreen model. How I wish I could have waited.

Of course, being the slimmest ultrabook on the block doesn't come without a cost—in this case, a relatively short battery life. Although the Carbon uses an 8-cell battery, it lasted only 6 hours and 24 minutes in our strenuous video-playback rundown test. That's not bad, but it's an hour and a half less than the HP EliteBook Folio 1040.

When you take the ThinkPad X1 Carbon out of the nondescript box, you are immediately impressed by the top casing of polymer that is reinforced with carbon fiber, coupled with the magnesium aluminum alloy on the bottom. As with Lenovo's other recent ThinkPad releases, there are a lot of things to like about the ThinkPad X1 Carbon: it is very thin and light, yet has the appeal of a classic ThinkPad all the way down to the red keyboard trackpoint. The display is phenomenal, and will satisfy digital artists, graphic designers, photographers, or anyone with a hearty appreciation for a high-quality display. Despite its thin size, the X1 Carbon has all the ports most users will need in a laptop, with the exception of Ethernet, though as there is an adapter for that, as mentioned.

I actually tested two identical models, because the first one Lenovo sent me had a bug wherein the touchscreen sometimes stopped responding to touch after it had been in sleep mode. The second machine didn’t show any trace of this problem. Lenovo is investigating, and noted that it had just loaded new software onto my first test machine. Bottom line: The idea of adaptive virtual keys is a good one, and gestures and voice commands make sense, too. In theory. But Lenovo did only from okay to awful in these three categories in this first effort.

Intel HD Graphics 4400: ULV geïntegreerde grafische GPU (GT2) met 20 EU's die je aantreft op sommige Haswell CPU modellen.

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

4200U: Haswell-gebaseerde ULV dual-core processor geklokt aan 1.6 GHz met ondersteuning voor Turbo Boost tot en met 2.6 GHz. De CPU is uitgerust met een geïntegreerde HD Graphics 4400 en een dual-channel DDR3 geheugen-controller.

14.00": Dit schermformaat wordt vooral gebruikt voor subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles. Voor alle drie types is dit formaat redelijk groot. De grootste verscheidenheid aan subnotebooks wordt vertegenwoordigd in deze klasse.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.

1.4 kg: Dit gewicht is typisch voor erg grote tablets, subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles met een 11-13 inch schermdiagonaal.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" uit de Engelse legende, novo (Latijn voor nieuw) werd in 1984 opgericht als Chinees handelsbedrijf in computers. In 2004 was het bedrijf de grootste laptopfabrikant in China en, na de overname van IBM's pc-divisie in 2005, de op drie na grootste ter wereld. Naast desktops en notebooks produceert het bedrijf monitoren, projectors, servers, enz. en is het gespecialiseerd in de ontwikkeling, productie en marketing van consumentenelektronica, pc's, software, bedrijfsoplossingen en aanverwante diensten.

In 2016 stond het bedrijf op de eerste plaats in de wereld wat betreft computerverkopen. Dit was in 2023 nog steeds het geval, met een wereldwijd marktaandeel van ongeveer 23%. Belangrijke productlijnen zijn Thinkpad, Legion en Ideapad.

In 2011 verwierf het een meerderheidsbelang in Medion AG, een Europese fabrikant van computerhardware. In 2014 werd Motorola Mobility gekocht, wat Lenovo een boost gaf op de smartphonemarkt.

77.81%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
