Game On. Razer maakt zich op voor de tweede ronde. Na de eerste echte gaming-smartphone met de simpele naam "Phone", hebben ze de - verrassing - Phone 2 geïntroduceerd. Laat je echter niet misleiden door de weinig inspirerende naam: de Phone 2 is allesbehalve saai. Laten we eens kijken naar wat de gloednieuwe gaming-smartphone in huis heeft en wat de zwakke punten zijn.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 2451 Hz ≤ 20 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 2451 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 20 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 2451 Hz is redelijk hoog en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering zouden dit dus niet mogen waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen.

Ter vergelijking: 52 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 9152 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 142900) Hz waargenomen.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde prima responstijden in onze tests maar is misschien wat te traag voor competitieve games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 9 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (25.7 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

En die ondersteuning is er: het aantal games met ondersteuning voor 120 Hz groeit snel. Misschien zelfs snel genoeg om van de exotische deelnemer een pionier op het gebied van gaming-smartphones te maken waar elke mobiele gamer naar op zoek is.

De Snapdragon 845 en 8 GB RAM van Qualcomm zijn snel en krachtig, maar niet uniek voor de Razer Phone 2 en ook niet significant sneller en beter dan de eigen high-performance chips van Samsung en Huawei. Die chips kunnen zelfs duurder zijn dan de $799 waar Razer om vraagt. De enige echte zwakte is het gebrek aan uithoudingsvermogen - als de batterijlevensduur belangrijk voor je is, zijn wellicht de concurrenten het overwegen waard.

Aan de goedkopere kant van het spectrum zit de Xiaomi Black Shark. Een smartphone die bijna net zo goed presteerde als de Razer Phone 2 in onze tests, maar slechts ongeveer de helft kost. Als je op een Razer aandringt, wil je misschien ook het model van vorig jaar overwegen, hoewel dat model op het moment van schrijven slechts $100 goedkoper was dan de Phone 2. Het oude model mist het geavanceerde koelsysteem, draadloos opladen, de IP67-certificering en het Chroma RGB-logo.

In sommige landen zijn de telefoons van Razer al beschikbaar als aanbod van gesubsidieerde mobiele serviceproviders. We raden ten sterkste aan om eerst de telefoon ergens vast te houden en ervoor te zorgen dat de vorm met de vierkante randen prettig in je handen ligt. En zelfs als dit niet het geval is, spreken de overweldigende prestaties voor zichzelf.
