De Huawei Nova is een mooi afgewerkt toestel dat door zijn relatief kleine scherm en goed afgewerkte behuizing goed in de hand ligt. Het toestel is voor dagelijks gebruik prima qua snelheid en gemak, foto's zien er goed uit en de software van Huawei wordt steeds gebruiksvriendelijker.

Als je op zoek bent naar een nieuwe telefoon rond de 400 euro is de Huawei Nova geen slechte keuze. De camera is goed en snel, hoewel foto's in de schemering te wensen over laten. Het display van de telefoon is goed en ziet er mooi uit. De Nova heeft een redelijke speaker en een goede batterij. Het grootste nadeel van de telefoon is de EMUI software, maar daar tegenover staat wel het enorm strakke design van de telefoon zelf. De markt voor 400-euro telefoons is echter overvol en de Nova springt er niet uit. Het dus niet dé 400-euro-telefoon van dit moment.

Huawei richt zich met de Nova vooral op ontwerp en dat is, in mijn ogen in ieder geval, aan het toestel terug te zien. Ik vind de Nova er prachtig uitzien en samen met zijn prima batterijduur is dat het belangrijkste voordeel van het toestel. Of liever gezegd: de belangrijkste onderscheidende factor. Design is en blijft namelijk nogal persoonlijk en dat maakt het meteen lastig om te zeggen hoe ‘goed’ deze Nova is.

The Nova isn’t a bad phone. But it is a R6 999 phone. So I expect it to impress me more than some of the 3k smartphones I’ve been playing with. It didn’t. Don’t get me wrong, it has some great features which include the premium design, great graphics and super battery power (I didn’t mention this earlier – the battery power is top class). However, when it comes down to it I just don’t think the price tag justifies what you’re getting. Rather splurge a bit more and get the Mate 9.

So, what do we think of the Huawei Nova? While it’s good on paper, it’s slightly underwhelming in real life. The processor isn’t quite as quick as the competition, the graphical capabilities aren’t great and the quality of low-light photography is less than expected, even for a mid-range smartphone. What is good is the design – it’s sleek, gorgeous and is extremely comfortable to use, and definitely doesn’t look like a ~£300 smartphone. While it’ll suffice for the likes of Facebook, Snapchat and managing email, we wouldn’t recommend it for high-end gaming or for use as a replacement DSLR. With companies like OnePlus dominating the mid-range scene with high-end internals, it makes it hard to recommend the fairly average Huawei Nova.

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
