When it comes to releasing a large screen notebook, HP has been a little slow off the mark. After all, both Acer and Dell have been selling theirs for close to a year now. However, the HP Pavilion HDX9095EA is well worth waiting for and certainly lives up to its name as an "Entertainment Notebook". HP feels so confident about this machine they’ve even dubbed it "The Dragon". From the moment you receive this machine you know you’ve got a luxury product, as even the box it comes in has been designed. No simple brown box, no, unpacking the Dragon is supposed to be impressive. And so it is, the 20.1-inch screen sits on a pivot akin to those found on an external TFT monitor. This means instead of just opening the screen as you would a normal notebook, you can pitch it to exactly the angle you require. This is an important feature as there is a lot of screen to get to grips with. The quality of the panel is amazing and is easily as bright as that of your television.

HP refers to its HDX9095ea as the Dragon, a nickname we're inclined to use too since "desktop replacement" really doesn't sum up just how big it is. It's an 8.2kg beast (including power adapter) that boasts a 20.1in widescreen LCD. The display is a joy to use, being slightly brighter that Rock Xtreme 770 while retaining a similar reflective coating to increase contrast. The dragon reinforces its name with scaly artwork across the chassis. A double-jointed spine lets you angle the screen is various ways, including pulling it forward for better movie viewing. The screen has a 1,680x1,050 pixel resolution, which is enough to deal with 720p content but can't handle 1080p footage - this is a minor complaint, since high-definition content looks great on it anyway. HP has included an HD DVD drive (read only, but with DVD writing capabilities) to boost its high-definition credentials, while the graphics are provided courtesy of ATI's Radeon Mobility HD 2600XT chip, which has the same excellent video processing abilities as its desktop counterpart.

After the impressive show it made with its TouchSmart series earlier in the year (web ID: 106397, 107883), it's clear HP is taking to the consumer entertainment market in a big way. And it doesn't come much bigger than the HDX9095EA - a notebook we first spied at CeBIT in March, when it was known simply as "The Dragon". Now we've bagged a look at the first one in the UK. Open up the subtly patterned lid and you'll be greeted with the sight of its gargantuan 20.1in widescreen TFT. With a weight of more than 7kg, HP really is taking the desktop-replacement concept to its practical limit. This is no ordinary chassis either, with HP adopting the Intel-originated "stalk" lid design first seen on Dialogue's Flybook VM HSDPA (web ID: 110686). At this scale it needs some reinforcement, resulting in a large protuberance on the lid that contains mechanics to lock the hinge between certain angles. It feels solid enough, but is prone to some disturbing crunching sounds if shut in a hurry.

Fastest, lightest, smallest, these are all superlatives that laptop manufacturers are keen to see associated with their products. Strange, then, that HP's latest 'portable' is the largest and heaviest laptop we have ever seen. At 7kg in weight, even without the beefy 1.2kg charger, it's a struggle to lift this behemoth. HP's latest desktop replacement proves that big can indeed be beautiful.

HP: Het Amerikaanse bedrijf werd opgericht in 1939 en is een belangrijke server- en printerfabrikant en een van de toonaangevende IT-bedrijven ter wereld. Tot 2015 heette het bedrijf Hewlett-Packard Company. Na een splitsing werd de computerdivisie omgedoopt tot HP Inc.

In 2023 had HP een geschat marktaandeel van 22% van de wereldwijde pc-verkoop, waarmee het nummer 2 werd na Lenovo.

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT is een DirectX 10 grafische kaart van ATI en directe concurrent van de NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT grafische kaart voor laptops. Deze verscheen voor het eerst in de desktop vervangende laptop HP Pavillion HDX 20" en vertoonde goede benchmarks (in combinatie met de Intel T7700 Core 2 Duo processor) en zou goed genoeg kunnen zijn voor performance class 1. Dit zou betekenen dat de kaart alle moderne spellen kan weergeven in hoge resolutie zonder bewegingsonderbrekingen.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS: De Nvidia GeForce 8800M GTS is gebaseerd op de Desktop G92 chip en biedt betere prestaties dan de GeForce 8700M GT door een 256 bit memory bus en veel meer Shaders. Het aantal Shaders is minder dan bij de GTX version (64 versus 96).

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

T7500: De Core 2 Duo T7500 is een Merom Core 2 Duo met 4MB Level 2 cache. Hij zit het middensegment (2009) en presteert vergelijkbaar met een moderne P7550 of Turion II Ultra M640/M660.

T9300: De T9300 is een snelle dual core processor uit het middensegment voor laptops en is vergelijkbaar met de T9400 maar heeft een lagere FSB.
