The Envy 16 could have been more powerful, but HP chooses to prioritize comfort once again. Still, the chassis of the laptop gets warm, as the thin profile and the aluminum housing don’t isolate the heat well enough. If you’re not afraid of an extra 100 grams and a thicker device, HP has another offer with the Omen 16. It uses many of the same materials, and the screen is good as well. Most importantly, it offers more performance.

The Dell XPS 15 OLED has earned rave reviews, including ours—and while its screen may be 0.4 inch smaller than the Envy 16's, it's almost a pound lighter. But it's also $2,249 with a slightly slower GeForce RTX 3050 Ti GPU, a slightly lower-resolution screen, shorter battery life, and an inferior 720p webcam. The HP seen here is $400 less with the HDMI and USB-A ports that the Dell lacks, and its base model is a bargain with an appealing 2.5K, 120Hz display. (Lenovo's Yoga 7i 16 and Dell's Inspiron 16 Plus are worthy competitors, but have no OLED option.)

Overall, the HP Envy 16 is a great laptop with a fantastic display and great power. Just the battery life holds it back from being perfect, and for that, you might want to consider a Spectre, or an HP OMEN gaming laptop instead. The HP Envy 16 packs a lot for creators and the everyday user, too. OLED displays, powerful RTX graphics, Intel H-class processors make it a great buy.

The Envy 16, HP’s elegant and more affordable alternative to their Spectre line, boasts serious performance at fairly price. It has Intel 12th gen H series Alder Lake CPUs and Intel Arc or NVIDIA RTX 3060 GPUs. The Envy 16 is a traditional clamshell laptop with your choice of 120Hz 2.5K resolution IPS or 4+ OLED displays (both touch and 16:10 aspect ratio). You can get it with Core i5, i7 and i9 processors and it has upgradable RAM and SSDs. The aluminum chassis has convenient legacy ports like USB-A and HDMI in addition to Thunderbolt 4. The Envy 16 is aimed a creators of all kinds who need good displays, dedicated graphics and strong performance in a fairly portable package. It can also handle light to moderate gaming.

I didn’t get to spend much time with the HP Envy 16-inch, but I liked what I saw. The large screen made it easy to fit multiple tabs on the screen – ideal for productivity – and the screen itself appeared bright and vibrant, which would be great for watching media. The large size and weight may discourage people from using this device as a hybrid working laptop, although I’d recommend that anyone who needs a powerful device for content creation or productivity consider the HP Envy 16-inch.
