The GTX 1050 card is not really a beast, but can hold proper frame rates if you can skimp on few settings (yet use 1080p resolution). Because of the 15-inch display, this unit is also tad smaller than its bigger brother, so perhaps more suitable for carrying. Just note the battery life on all these models is subpar compared to non-gaming notebooks. Anyway, for its core job – to keep players happy – this ASUS is a right tool!

Other components are in check too since there is a new 7th Gen Core i7 powering the system and SSD serving your files fast. The only blunder, which is common in all gaming systems, is poor battery life. If you don’t care about that there are no real drawbacks. So choose this ASUS ROG as your new laptop, that is my advice!

Let us put it this way, if you have the extra cash, we strongly recommend going for the ASUS ROG GL553VE instead of the recently reviewed Lenovo Legion Y520 or Acer Aspire VX 15 (VX5-591G). We still have to do a review of the GTX 1050 Ti version of the VX 15 to be fair, but our opinion of the Legion Y520 remains – it’s still the best one considering the value. However, the GL553VE excels with a crisp IPS panel, far superior to the one we’ve tested on the Legion Y520 and offers a customizable RGB keyboard with overall better feel and comfort and more importantly – far better cooling solution.

Contrary to the majority of the ROG family, the ROG STRIX is a more subdued design and barring its glowing ROG logo, its more conventional in terms of design and physical attributes. Build quality is passable as average but we do note ASUS’ distinct detailing on the tooling, rubber feet and other particulars which allow them to distinguish this model than the mainstream line.

De GL553VD heeft stevige behuizing, een zeer goed scherm en een prima toetsenbord. We zijn minder onder de indruk van de ssd en de touchpad, maar echt grote hardwarematige minpunten heeft deze laptop niet. Het grootste minpunt is de prijs. De Core i7-cpu en 16GB ram vind je misschien niet terug in de meeste goedkopere alternatieven, maar deze zaken hebben weinig invloed op de prestaties in games. De GTX 1050-videokaart is een stuk minder snel dan de Ti-versie en voor 1300 euro zijn er veel alternatieven met deze snellere gpu.

Bij aankoop twijfelde ik tussen deze laptop en de MSI GL62 6QD-016NL. Uiteindelijk vanwege de iets betere grafische kaart en het design voor de Asus gekozen.

Its biggest shortcoming is battery life, and even then it’s not a complete lost cause in the portability department. The cheapest Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming, which features a near-identical specification, has a much poorer screen, and the same is true of the Acer Aspire VX 15. At this price, the Asus is the best buy.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is een grote Taiwanese fabrikant van computerhardware gevestigd in Taipei, opgericht in 1989. Onder de merknaam Asus produceert het bedrijf een breed scala aan producten, waaronder laptops, desktops, moederborden, grafische kaarten, monitoren, smartphones en netwerkapparatuur, complete systemen en pc-onderdelen voor eindgebruikers.
Onder de merknaam ROG (Republic of Gamers) produceert ASUS gaming laptops die bij gamers bekend staan om hun krachtige specificaties, speciale grafische kaarten, schermen met hoge verversingssnelheid en geavanceerde koelsystemen.
Naast gaming wordt een breed scala aan notebooks aangeboden voor verschillende behoeften en budgetten, van ultraslanke en lichtgewicht ultrabooks tot veelzijdige 2-in-1 convertibles en budgetvriendelijke opties. In 2023 had Asus wereldwijd een marktaandeel van 7% op de pc-markt.
De klanttevredenheid over ASUS-notebooks heeft betrekking op de prestaties, de functies en de goede prijs-prestatieverhouding van ASUS-notebooks. Zoals bij elk merk zijn er echter af en toe meldingen van problemen zoals oververhitting, drivercompatibiliteit of problemen met de bouwkwaliteit.
Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile:
Mainstream grafische kaart gebaseerd op Nvidia's Pascal-architectuur en opvolger van de GeForce GTX 960M. Is gefabriceerd in een 14nm-proces bij Samsung en de technische specificaties zijn erg vergelijkbaar met de desktopversie.

Quad-core notebook-processor gebaseerd op de Kaby Lake-architectuur en geklokt aan 2.5 - 3.5 GHz zonder Hyper Threading (dat ondersteund wordt door de snellere i7-CPU's). De chip beschikt over een geïntegreerde HD Graphics 630 GPU geklokt aan 350 - 1000 MHz en is gefabriceerd in een 14nm-proces (verbeterd ten opzichte van Skylake).
