Alienware 16 Area-51 Review: If Only the Display Was as Fantastic as the Mechanical Keyboard

The new Area-51 laptop feels like Alienware in a way that its most recent gaming PCs like its mammoth Area-51 desktop have not. The gaming laptop is extra: extra glowy, extra clicky, and all too over the top. The bottom panel sports a massive window where you can peer directly at the fan components. The only way you’d catch a glimpse of the rotating fans and the tint of RGB is if you lift up your laptop as if you were looking for a quarter that rolled under your dresser. The Razer Blade 18 has a similar portal on its undercarriage. As pointless as that is on either laptop, for the ever-extra Dell-owned Alienware, it seems more on point.

This Premium Gaming Laptop Might Just Be My New Favorite

In my opinion, the Alienware 16 Area-51 (2025) has very few faults. Those small flaws include the bulky, weighty build (which I really didn't mind!), the fan noise, the fairly dismal battery life, and the lack of an OLED display option. Those small things aside, the Area-51 outperformed most gaming laptops I've seen to date, which is why it's at the top of my list for the price range. If you're looking for beautiful graphics on a large display, two of the best gaming laptop CPUs and GPUs you can get, and enough power to eke out impressively high frame rates for resource-heavy games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, you won't want to look elsewhere. Still, this laptop won't be for everyone. Especially if you prefer a slimmer, less powerful option for travel purposes.

The biggest disadvantage with the Nitro V 16S AI is its 1,920x1,200-pixel display, which is a step down from the 16 Aurora's 2.5K display. But with a throttled RTX 5050 in the case of the 16 Aurora or a throttled RTX 5060 in the case of the Nitro V 16S AI, you are likely gaming at 1080p/1200p, so you don't necessarily need the 16 Aurora's higher-res display.

Alienware: Alienware werd in 1996 opgericht in de VS. Het Europese hoofdkantoor is gevestigd in Ierland. Alienware maakt sinds 2006 deel uit van de Dell Group. Het productassortiment richt zich voornamelijk op gaming laptops en desktops, die ontwikkeld en geproduceerd worden door Dell. Het handelsmerk is een licht futuristisch ontwerp met een Alien als logo. Daarnaast worden er werkstations voor particulieren en bedrijven verkocht.
Zoals bij elk merk zijn er ook bij Alienware enkele punten van kritiek. Intel Arrow Lake:
Ultra 9 275HX: Mobiele high-end CPU voor gaming notebooks gebaseerd op de Arrow Lake architectuur. Biedt 24 cores, bestaande uit 8 snelle cores met een kloksnelheid tot 5,4 GHz en 16 kleinere efficiënte cores met een kloksnelheid tot 4,6 GHz. De CPU heeft toegang tot 40 MB L2 cache en 36 MB L3 cache en heeft een TDP van 55 watt. De SoC bevat een kleine speciale NPU genaamd AI Boost met 13 TOPS (Int8) en ondersteunt optioneel vPro Essentials.
Intel Raptor Lake-H:
Core 7 240H: Op Alder Lake gebaseerde mobiele CPU met 6 prestatie-kernen en 4 efficiënte kernen. De prestatie-kernen bieden hyper-threading voor in totaal 16 threads. De CPU draait op 1,8 tot 5,2 GHz. Vergeleken met de oudere Core i7-13620H biedt de Core 7 240H hogere kloksnelheden (vooral Turbo Boost) en ondersteuning voor DDR5-5600.
