De Apple A9 chip is de huidige maatstaaf in het smartphone segment. Alle topmodellen worden in vrijwel alle tests verslagen en de grafische rekenkracht steekt ver boven de concurrentie uit. Een ander sterke eigenschap van de iPhones is de browser prestaties. Het is indrukwekkend wat het nieuwe apparaat uit Cupertine hier kan leveren. iOS 9 speelt hierin ook een rol, bleek uit tests met oudere iOS apparaten.

De behuizing van de iPhone 6S Plus is nu stabieler en - hopelijk - resistenter tegen krassen. Er zouden geen problemen meer moeten optreden met een Bendgate 2.0. Dat het S model enigszins dikker, langer en breder is, speelt geen rol bij alledaags gebruik. Het hogere gewicht is daarentegen wel duidelijk merkbaar, vooral als de telefoon in één hand wordt gehouden. Opnieuw is de kwaliteit van de behuizing op een zeer hoog niveau. Het ontwerp is niet veranderd, maar dat is een kwestie van smaak.

Apple heeft ook de communicatiemodules aangepakt: nieuwste Bluetooth, sneller Wi-Fi en LTE modules maken de 6S generatie aantrekkelijker. Dat NFC slechts voor Apple Pay gebruikt kan worden is typisch iets voor Apple. Dit geldt ook voor het geheugen dat niet uit te breiden is.

Al deze eigenschappen worden gekoesterd, maar rechtvaardigen niet een upgrade van het voorgaande model naar de nieuwe versie. De iPhone 6 Plus is nog steeds één van de krachtigste smartphones op de markt. Het verschil is alleen het nieuwe 3D Touch concept. Nieuwe functies en menu's verbeteren de gebruikservaring, maar iOS 9 en 3D Touch werken niet vlekkeloos. Live Photos is een leuke toevoeging, maar de korte fragmenten zijn alleen goed als je iets prachtigs kan filmen. Live Photos voegt niets toe aan foto's van stilstaande objecten. Kinderen en dieren zijn wel geschikt. De beeldkwaliteit van de camera's is er niet veel op vooruit gegaan, in ieder geval wat betreft de grote camera. De foto's zijn van bovengemiddelde kwaliteit en video's kunnen nu ook in 4K worden opgenomen. Echter, de nieuwe iPhone laat hier veel liggen vergeleken met de S6 modellen van Samsung of de LG G4. Aan de voorkant zijn wel verbeteringen zichtbaar en de beeldscherm flits is een welkome verandering.

Wat valt er nog meer te zeggen? De looptijden zijn vergelijkbaar met de voorgangers of zelfs beter, ondanks de kleinere batterij. De iPhone 6S Plus heeft dus voldoende uithoudingsvermogen. Als de batterij bijna leeg is, kan je ook kiezen voor de nieuwe energiebesparingsmodus.

Is de nieuwe Apple iPhone 6S Plus de beste telefoon op de huidige markt? Niet echt. De S6 modellen van Samsung lopen nog steeds een stap voor op de nieuwe iPhone. De S6 Plus is echter nog steeds een goede smartphone - en zeker de beste iPhone.
