The Samsung Q70 is a good all-round notebook that will suit the daily traveller. While the screen isn’t as bright as we’d have liked, the battery life and keyboard make this a great notebook for using on the daily commute or in the University library. The specification offers good value for money and the build quality won’t disappoint.

We first examined the original Samsung Q70 over a year ago, and we were impressed: a 13in notebook with copious amounts of power, a decent screen and long-lasting battery life. That was a while ago, though, so we've got our hands on a new model to see if the latest raft of updates maintains the high standard. A worthy upgrade that adds power, battery life and versatility - although the same old niggles remain.

They don't make budget notebooks like they used to. Just a year or two ago, you'd have to put up with a poorly designed lump of plastic if you couldn't spend over a grand. Now, you can pick up a well-engineered, stylish machine such as this Samsung Q70. A combination of Intel's 2GHz T7300 Core 2 processor and 2GB of RAM means there's enough grunt here to keep the Q70 looking speedy for several years. It raced through our benchmarks, scoring 1.01 overall - 1% faster than our reference 3.2GHz Pentium D desktop PC. The Q70's even capable of some after-hours gaming: Nvidia's GeForce 8400M G graphics will struggle with modern games, scoring an average of 19fps in Call of Duty 2 at our low settings, but it can cope with older, less demanding titles. There's a large hard disk on offer, too. It's nominally 160GB and, even after Windows Vista Home Premium has had its wicked way, there's still 140GB of space - Samsung splits this across two 70GB partitions, so you could use one for programs and one for data.

The 13.3” Samsung Q70 is a new model to fill a gap in the Samsung product range. It is too large to be called an ultra-portable and, while it is reasonably light, it is not very thin. It is slightly larger than the popular Q35 and its successor, the Q45. The Q70 was not shown by Samsung at CeBIT. Was it still under development or were they deliberately keeping it secret to give the market a surprise? As well as increasing the display size, the notebook has acquired extra weight and thickness and at, 2.03kg (4.45lb) and a maximum 45mm (1.75”), it cannot be classed as either thin-and-light or ultraportable. The Samsung Q70 is a well built notebook but it is a little bulky. It is responsive with good processing power and a large, but quiet fan. A benefit of the thick chassis is that the external surfaces stay acceptably cool. If lightly loaded, it can only run for about 3 hours off its 6 cell battery. So where does the Q70 fit in the market?

The Samsung Q70 is an excellent laptop that will be equally well suited as a business or an entertainment laptop. It’ll blend beautifully into any corporate environment thanks to its glossy finish and nimble 2kg frame, while the fast speed and excellent screen will please gamers and multimedia users. We found the Samsung Q70 to be a better performer than the Samsung Q35 (read our Samsung Q35 review here), and the it showed up well in our WorldBench speed benchmark tests, hitting an excellent score of 78. The Samsung Q70's framerate score of 21fps (frames per second) in our games tests didn’t impress quite as much, although this is still a decent figure. The glossy screen is smaller than most, but the Samsung Q70 still displays images of a crisp quality. We found the viewing angles to be good and the widescreen capabilities worked well during video playback. Although the Samsung Q70's keyboard is small, it's comfortable to use. Its only downfall is the small spacebar. This, though, is understandable due to the Samsung Q70's compact size.

Commentaar

NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G: NVidia GeForce 8400M G is de capabele opvolger van de DirectX 10 van de GeForce 7400 voor laptops en technologisch een langzamere en gereduceerde 8400M GT video kaart met gehalveerd geheugenverbinding en slechts de helft van het aantal stream processors. De prestatie is een tikje boven die van de 7400 en daardoor kan hij huidige spellen met vermindere details / resolutie weergeven.  Voor mensen die slechts af en toe spelen, is dit mogelijk voldoende.

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

T7500: De Core 2 Duo T7500 is een Merom Core 2 Duo met 4MB Level 2 cache. Hij zit het middensegment (2009) en presteert vergelijkbaar met een moderne P7550 of Turion II Ultra M640/M660.

13.30": Dit schermformaat wordt vooral gebruikt voor subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles. Voor alle drie types is dit formaat redelijk groot. De grootste verscheidenheid aan subnotebooks wordt vertegenwoordigd in deze klasse.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.

2 kg: Gewoonlijk hebben subnotebooks, ultrabooks en redelijk lichte laptops met een 12-16 inch schermdiagonaal dit gewicht.

Samsung: Samsung Group is het grootste Zuid-Koreaanse conglomeraat en werd opgericht in 1938. Samsung produceert een breed scala aan elektronische producten, waaronder smartphones, televisies, huishoudelijke apparaten en halfgeleiders. De Galaxy-smartphonelijn van het bedrijf is een van de meest populaire ter wereld. Samsung is ook een belangrijke speler in de halfgeleiderindustrie en maakt geheugenchips en processors voor veel andere elektronicafabrikanten.

75.38%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
