  MSI GT627 is a powerful quad-core gaming system, but it is not without its flaws. Lately, MSI is better known for its Wind netbooks than its gaming systems, but the GT627 aims to change that, as its quad-core power makes it ideal for power-hungry gamers on a budget. With the questionable design choices and awkward usability conflicting with the impressive power and specifications, the MSI GT627 is quite a tough-sell. If you're seeking an eye-catching gaming laptop on a budget, it has plenty to offer, but it is far from perfect.

Even though we weren’t able to run all of our benchmarking tests at the GT627’s native screen resolution, once we hooked up an external monitor the machine proved that it had the power to pull off respectable scores. In fact, the GT627 even managed to hit 8197 3DMarks, which is approximately 15% lower than the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 desktop replacement that costs twice as much. Even with the GT627’s relatively low native screen resolution, we feel that the MSI GT627 offers a great set of features and performance at a reasonable price.

As usual, MSI provides a laptop which while not without its share of flaws does provide good value. A strong all-rounder, the GT627 offers quad-core processing, 9800-series graphics, a slightly above average screen and decent battery life, as well as an attractive set of extras that include a bag and competent gaming mouse. This leaves just the questionable styling, which admittedly is quite a hurdle, but if you're prepared to be pragmatic there's plenty to enjoy here.

Few laptops shout about their gaming credentials as much as the new MSI GT627. This is one loudmouth laptop with a bright red strip of plastic wrapped all around the chassis, crimson highlighting on the WASD key cluster, and a row of touch-sensitive media buttons above the keyboard, also surrounded by red lines, circles and dots. There's even a Turbo button that promises off-the-cuff overclocking. Plenty of power, but the rest of MSI's adventurous gaming laptop proves disappointing.

PC gaming on a laptop is a touch act to balance between performance, size and price. MSI's GT627-216US does a very good job at putting together a very affordable laptop gaming platform that isn't too large yet still packs enough performance for some high quality 3D gaming. The system isn't without its quirks though. These include a keyboard with a bit too much flex, just two USB ports and speakers that don't have the same level of audio quality at the low end many would expect a gaming laptop to have.

With their outrageous designs and big, high-resolution screens, twin graphics cards and quad-core processors, hard-core gaming laptops like the Alienware M17 and the Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 are meant to dazzle customers. The MSI GT627-218US takes a more subdued approach, homing in on two areas that matter most to cash-strapped gamers: a powerful 3D gaming card and affordability. The Nvidia GeForce 9800M GS turned in hard-core-gaming-caliber scores, and if you can get past the flimsy keyboard, the price Amazon.com is selling it for is simply fantastic. The MSI GT627-218US is a perfect gaming solution for cash-strapped gamers on the move, because the powerful Nvidia graphics card delivers smooth frames at a budget price.

MSI has created a machine that delivers a good gaming experience for a very reasonable $1,149. But there are a few compromises; while it packs the right hardware in a portable 15.4-inch form factor, the keyboard congestion really irked us. Gamers will appreciate the ability to use a full number pad for macros, but we think they would have appreciated a larger, more spacious keyboard instead. However, that the GT627 was able to cruise through Far Cry 2 without a glitch and that it outperformed the more expensive Alienware M17 in our PCMark Vantage test was impressive. If you need a system that will fit in your backpack and allow you to enjoy the latest titles, then the MSI GT627 is a good value.

Micro-Star International made its first big push into the U.S. market with its Wind U100 netbook. Now it's targeting the entry-level gaming laptop market with the GT627. But while the hardware specs look good on paper and provide a good deal of power, a couple of design and build issues severely limit the system's appeal. The GT627 is an affordable gaming laptop that will ably play today's current crop of games, but some prospective buyers will conclude that its low-resolution screen and nonstandard keyboard are deal-breakers.

Overall the MSI GT627 proved to be a fast gaming notebook with good looks but showed room for improvement in terms of build quality. The keyboard felt springy and didn’t have much support and the palmrest showed considerable flex. Gaming performance is where this notebook showed its true colors, with high benchmarks and good in-game performance. The Turbo feature while sounding somewhat gimmicky did show good results in some gaming situations. MSI would have one of the best gaming notebooks with its great price, great looks, and excellent performance if not for the springboard chassis.

Powered by a speedy Nvidia mobile graphics solution, the MSI GT627-216US packs a lot of 3D muscle in its attractive 15-inch frame, and at $1,149.99 it’s relatively affordable. We love being able to boost CPU performance with the touch of a button, but serious gamers will likely balk at the low-resolution screen. The MSI GT627 offers good 3D performance and easy overclocking at a reasonable price, but its low-resolution screen and short battery life are a letdown.

NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS: Net als de 9800M GTS is de 9800M GS gebaseerd op de G94 core maar met een lagere kloksnelheid. Hij wordt op 55 nm geproduceerd en heeft daarmee een lager stroomverbruik (60W). De geïntegreerde PureVideo HD engine is in staat HD video’s te decoderen.

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

P8600: Snel maar nog geen overprijsde dual core CPU. Voor de meeste games en multimedia applicaties voldoende en door de TDP van 25W ook bruikbaar voor kleinere laptops.
