EN→NLThe Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS is a great gaming handheld for SteamOS, offering beefier performance than the Steam Deck, plus a higher resolution screen, and arguably even better ergonomics. It is more expensive than Valve’s option, but is worth it if you want a potent handheld option with the convenience of SteamOS without any of the faff of installing it yourself. The battery life of this Lenovo option could be better, though. It is possible to get the likes of the Asus ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go for a similar outlay if you shop around, and of course, the Asus ROG Xbox Ally, although they all run Windows by default, which isn’t a particularly touchscreen-optimised OS. You can install SteamOS on them, although it is a faff against getting it out of the box, and in some instances, the Z1 Extreme handhelds are a bit faster. Nonetheless, the Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS is a great gaming handheld in either configuration, and it’s a good starting point if you want to keep things nice and easy.

EN→NLI've been hugely impressed by the SteamOS version of Lenovo's Legion Go S. It feels like the PC gaming handheld I'd most like to keep using out of those I've tried, and that's largely down to the pairing of Steam's super-usable handheld OS with a good amount of power under the hood. It still can't handle the most bleeding-edge graphics, but for handheld-optimised games it's a beauty. That said, there's no escaping the fact that it's priced at a luxury level, albeit I think it looks really favourable compared to competition from the likes of Asus and MSI. If you want Steam convenience on the go and have the budget, the SteamOS Legion Go S is a doozy of a gaming machine.

EN→NLThe Lenovo Legion Go S is a lighter, less expensive, more portable version of the original Legion Go, powered by the latest AMD Z-series SoCs. The handheld can play most games with buttery smooth framerates, albeit with some slight adjustments. Being a cheaper model does mean making concessions, such as the Go S being a largely SteamOS-exclusive device with a smaller display and non-detachable joysticks. Its battery life also isn't the best, but gamers with a large Steam library will be hard-pressed to find a more powerful handheld for less than $1,000.

EN→NLMuch has been made, including right here on this very website, of the impact of SteamOS on the PC market. The Steam Deck has been a runaway success for Valve, and it's not hard to understand why other vendors are now seeking to sip from Valve's software cup. From our experience using SteamOS on the Lenovo Legion Go S, it provides a much more console-like experience for what is essentially a gaming PC. It's easy to see the Legion Go S as a downgraded version of the original Lenovo Legion Go due to the smaller and lower-resolution screen, the lack of detachable controls, and the missing kickstand. That's not really the case, though. At least in this version, with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, it has fundamentally the same or better performance than the original machine, and overall it feels like more focused device.

EN→NLThe Legion Go S SteamOS should have been the only Go S released. I’m not even sure why we were given the Windows version, probably contracts. This handheld is much better than its Windows counterpart in software performance. The design is really nice, and I love the color. If I had one complaint about the design it would be the grips. Like the Windows version, these are just a bit shallow for me. But it doesn’t make it bad; I can tolerate it. The buttons, sticks, and D-pad were all amazing and felt good. Performance and battery life are also good; battery life could be better, but this is something we deal with on gaming handhelds. SteamOS is the star of the show here. No Windows nonsense. No Windows AI. No Windows anything.

EN→NLThis is certainly a nuanced question, and it has an equally nuanced answer. I think the Lenovo Legion Go S is an excellent device, and I believe it’s most certainly a good value for those who are seeking a PC gaming handheld. However, whether or not you should buy it really depends on the version you buy. At a typical price of $829.99 for the model I tested, this is pretty expensive when a comparable Steam Deck is priced at $649.99. Mind you, the Legion Go S I tested has the same amount of storage, 1TB, no OLED display, and even similar battery life, even if the battery life is a little lower on the Steam Deck. With all of that being said, I think you should definitely buy the Legion Go S if you’re looking for a handheld, just not this model I tested, unless you really want to go with Steam OS and you want the most powerful option.

Tony is back with another handheld gaming PC review, but this one might seem familiar ???? The Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS is a true Steam Deck rival and arguably puts Windows 11 handheld to shame thanks to its snappy interface and strong performance.

EN→NLThe Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS is the best version of the Legion Go S. While there is a small sacrifice in the form of game selection tied to Steam, the benefits of leveraging the refined SteamOS experience are well worth that trade-off. If you’re looking for a portable handheld PC experience, the Legion Go S is on your radar. I cannot recommend choosing the Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS enough. Priced at $599.99, it is the best version Lenovo has to offer.

EN→NLI once said I wanted a handheld with the ROG Ally X’s specs that ran on SteamOS. I’m happy to say the Lenovo Legion Go S is literally what I’ve asked for. Unless we see a SteamOS-powered handheld with an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip released this year, I’m confident in saying this will be my favorite handheld of 2025. If you own a Steam Deck and are happy with it, then you don’t need to upgrade to this Legion Go S. Similarly, if SteamOS is too limiting, then you might be better off with a Windows 11 handheld like the first Legion Go S. The Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS heralds a brighter future for gaming handhelds and is a fantastic device in its own right. If you’ve considered buying a handheld but didn’t know which one to get, this is the one for you.

EN→NLWrestling with Windows 11 on a handheld gaming PC is something I’d only recommend for the most patient of gamers. If you can, choose the SteamOS version instead, or install SteamOS on the Windows 11 model for a significantly smoother experience. Alternatively, wait and see how Microsoft plans on improving the Windows gaming experience with its Xbox-themed device later in the year. Because of how close the Legion Go S is to the Steam Deck in terms of performance, wait until a sale brings it below $1,000. Otherwise, its comfortable form factor and big screen are decent enough drawcards when paired with games that make the most of handheld play.

EN→NLWhen the Lenovo Legion Go S first launched with Windows 11 back in February 2025, it was a bit of a joke. It was using the underpowered Z2 Go chip and the design made it way more difficult to navigate the operating system than it should have been. However, by swapping to a more powerful chipset and licensing SteamOS, Lenovo took a lemon and made it into one of the best handheld gaming PCs on the market, and a legitimate Steam Deck alternative.

EN→NLIt's unfair to compare a new device with one that's a couple of years old, but Valve's OG Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED are starting to feel a bit old compared with shiny new devices. As the first of what I hope is a decent-size field of new SteamOS-running hardware, I think Lenovo has gotten a lot of things right that I even found too quirky on Valve's device when I first got it, though. The SteamOS model of the Lenovo Go S does dole out its own share of sadness, especially given the $830 price tag of the top-end model I tested -- the IPS, non-HDR display instead of OLED is my biggest complaint -- but the bigger screen, better controls and device layout compensate a lot.

EN→NLThe Legion Go S is the first non-Valve gaming handheld utilizing SteamOS. Based on our early hands-on impressions, we think it could be a true rival to the Steam Deck and its Windows 11 counterparts.

EN→NLBut again, the Steam Deck does efficiency better. Simply limiting frame rate to 25fps and brightness to 40 percent can yield over eight hours of Balatro on the Deck, and I’ve gotten four hours, 42 minutes in Dave the Diver there. With the Legion Go S, my Dave only got 2.5 hours to hunt those sushi ingredients and blow up fake environmentalists! I am comfortable saying no one should buy the Windows version of the Lenovo Legion Go S, which costs $730 at Best Buy. Even if the performance, battery life, and price weren’t disqualifiers, Windows is a stain on this machine. And like other recent Windows handhelds I’ve tested, it does not reliably go to sleep and wake up again: I woke several mornings to find the system hot with fans spinning, even though I’d pressed the power button the previous evening.

EN→NLOverall, the Lenovo Legion Go S is a very nice Windows gaming handheld. Here’s the bottom line, from my perspective. If your goal is to buy a Windows gaming handheld for Xbox gaming and Steam gaming, the Legion Go S competes with the rest of the pack in this way. It’s a little pricey, but it’s built well and has very nice features and specs, so the value is there. The question you need to ask yourself is. Do you want to find a slightly larger and heavier Legion Go and save some money? Or perhaps wait for the SteamOS version of this? Or just buy a SteamDeck? I can’t tell you what to do. All I can say is; I believe this Lenovo Legion Go S gives you value for the money.
