It has become commonplace in the smartphone landscape: steady, somewhat slow improvement. There simply hasn’t been a major breakthrough since we collectively switched to screens that fill the front of the phone from top to bottom and camera systems that protrude above the chassis. As such, the new Pixel series is familiar and, above all, an upgrade for those who have been using their current phone for two years or more. The difference this year is that it’s also more appealing than ever for iPhone users to make the switch. We will return to these devices in a later article once we have physically used them. The same applies to the new Pixel Watch 4 (with a curved display) and the Pixel Buds 2a.

The hardware proved to be impressive as well, with high-quality workmanship, a bright and razor-sharp display, and speakers that delivered impressive audio. The software scored points with fast updates and a tidy look — only the limited options for personalization might be missed by some users. The camera was also first-class as usual and delivered realistic images via the typical "Pixel look".

Google Pixel 10 Pro Hands-on Preview: New brains

Always a difficult question this one. If you already own a Pixel phone, especially last year's Pixel 9 Pro, there's little to no reason to get the new Pixel 10 Pro. Yes, the Tensor G5 is faster, more efficient and can do some AI magic on-device, but we can bet our Christmas bonuses that most of these features will drip down older Pixels in the not-so-distant future. If you're looking to dip your toes into Google's ecosystem of devices and you want to buy your first Pixel phone, the Pixel 10 Pro is one of the best options on the market. You can get the XL variant if you need more screen estate or opt for the Fold if foldables are your thing, but the Pixel 10 Pro sits in the right spot when it comes to features per dollar spent. Google has two of the best Android phones I’ve used all year. I’ve been a fan of Pixel phones since the first one came out in 2016, and now, with its 10th generation, the Pixel has hit a new peak. The Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL are easily two of the most well-rounded phones of 2025, with great cameras, battery life, and genuinely useful AI that average users can appreciate. We’ve tried the best that this year has to offer, from the Galaxy S25 Ultra to the OnePlus 13 and beyond. And by comparison, once again, Google has nailed virtually everything you could ask for from a smartphone. Are the Pixel 10 Pro and Pro XL perfect? No, but boy do they come close. Between the speedy performance, reliable software updates, excellent cameras (this time with 100x AI zoom), and the same gorgeous design, there’s very little to dislike about these phones.

The Pixel 10 Pro is an impressive smartphone with solid video and photography capabilities, but it's not a significant leap over the Pixel 9 Pro. This is probably the most incremental smartphone update Google has released in its long-running Pixel line. With that in mind, if you're a hardcore Pixel fan that already owns the Pixel 9 Pro, you can skip this year without fear of missing anything major. However, if you're using a Pixel 7, Pixel 8, or Pixel 9, now might be the time to upgrade. The one key downside is that most of the Pixel 10 Pro's new AI features, including Magic Cue and Daily Hub, aren't very useful yet. Will they get better in a few weeks once Google pulls more of my data? Possibly, but I don't know for sure. There's also the question of why Ask Photos isn't available in Canada yet and when or if it will release?

I’m eager to put these phones through more testing to see how well they perform, but what I’ve been able to check out first hand convinces me that Google’s pulling ahead of the pack. The company has already established itself for having the best AI phones around, and the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL keeps on widening that gap. Samsung has done well to keep up with its Galaxy AI features, but I think it puts Apple Intelligence on notice because of the amount of new AI features present here with these Pixel 10 Pro devices. They add on to the existing set that Google has delivered, like Call Screen, Pixel Studio, Magic Editor, and much more. Hopefully other aspects of these phones are improved, namely the performance of the Tensor G5 and their battery life. One thing's certain: they make other phones look dumb.
