Don’t call it a Laptop. First of all the Precision series of Dell attracts professional users with especially high demands on performance. The Precision M6500 replaces the existing M6400 and offers as usually the most powerful hardware for notebooks: Intel's Extreme Core i7-920XM CPU, Nvidia Quadro FX 3800M or ATI FirePro M7740 graphics and up to 16GB (!) DDR3 1600MHz RAM. Anything else?

As a workstation class product, we had to look at additional tests to try and determine value. Ultimately, the recommendation is pretty straightforward: you buy a mobile workstation with certification to run the particular software package that you need for a reason. You can try the Dell Precision Workstation Advisor, though I suspect it will likely just confirm that the M6500 is capable of running your particular application.

ATI FirePro M7740: De AMD ATI FirePro M7740 is een high-end professionele videokaart voor laptops. Hij ondersteund gecertificeerde drivers voor professionele CAD (Computer Aided Design) en DCC (Digital Content Creation) applicaties. Naast de garantie dat deze programma's probleemloos zullen werken, is de driver en BIOS ook geoptimaliseerd voor OpenGL prestaties en enkele professionele functionaliteiten in de chip (zoals AA lines).
Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

720QM: De Core i7-720QM is de traagste Core i7 Quad Core uit 2009 en heeft kloksnelheden tussen de 1,6 en 2,8 GHz (door de Turbo mode). Daarmee combineert de processor de voordelen van een snelle single core processor en trage quad core CPU's. Vergeleken met snellere Core i7 mobiele CPU's heeft de 720QM slechts 6MB L3 Cache.
