As usual, Alienware’s latest gaming machine looks the part, and its exciting design is backed up by benchmark-breaking speed in the latest titles. The screen is good but not great, however, and the battery life during gameplay is typically poor. As usual, though, the price is high, and portable gaming power is available elsewhere for less, albeit without the bells and whistles. Only consider this if you’ve got money to burn.

The Alienware 17 is attractive, fast, and specced to the max. It’s the best performer we’ve tested so far, and it’s comparatively lightweight for the category. It does have its drawbacks, though: Lower-than-average battery life, a slippery keyboard, and a mediocre trackpad. This is one of the better-looking 17.3-inch notebooks out there, and it definitely delivers on performance.

The Alienware 17 isn't perfect – a laptop costing this much really ought to include a proper solid-state drive, and maybe 16 GB memory too. And, of course, its sheer size and weight mean that it's rarely going to leave home. However it provides top-of-the-range performance that would previously have cost you £2000 or more. It's a great choice for gamers who can afford not to compromise so much.

There's no doubt that the Alienware 17 continues the company's reputation for having high-quality, high-performance gaming laptops. A premium price comes with certain expectations, however, and with the less expensive Digital Storm Krypton offering similar performance, there is the question of what the extra money gets you. In the case of the Alienware 17, that means a premium design with high-quality metal construction, top-of-the-line hardware, and more than a terabyte of storage space.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 880M:

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
