As part of Acer's new Timeline range, the 4810T makes a good initial impression. Slim and clad in sombre grey plastic, it's a surprisingly good-looking machine for the money. But while it looks good while closed, it's a little disappointing to open it up and find the interior is standard Acer fare. The bezel around the screen is dark, matte grey, and the base is an inoffensive gunmetal grey that doesn't provoke the response the system does when it's closed. Nondescript looks and plodding performance are elevated by absolutely stunning battery life

Good basic features and Acer's low price point strategy can only mean this notebook will be appeal to most consumers. It's likely Acer has a winner on their hands with the Aspire Timeline 4810T. Heck, we won't be surprised if this notebook starts taking consumers by storm (and we'd probably be surprised if it doesn't). Suffice to say we would gladly recommend breaking out your wallets for this sleek notebook.

Ever since Apple's MacBook Air arrived on the scene there's been a pre-occupation with the thinness of laptops. As Apple proved, or dictated, thin and light generally (though not always) translates into under-featured and overpriced. However, as the newfound dominance of the netbook has shown, in these financially-troubled times people simply can't afford to pay as much for the privilege of portability. Cool, quiet, light, slim and understated, the Acer Timeline Aspire 4810T is one impressive machine. It's only possible downfall is its mediocre screen but this is more than made up for by its stunning battery life, feature set, and performance.

There isn't much to dislike about the 4810T. The design is somewhat conservative, but in that there is nothing to offend. Light in weight at 1.9kg, this is the sort of notebook that you can easily port around with you. The graphics might not give you the same performance that some dedicated GPU-sporting notebooks will, but then you have that really impressive battery life. A battery span that will let you fly across the Atlantic and use your notebook all the way, or spend the day out of your conference hotel room, and know your PC is going to have you covered. Prices for a basic Timeline models start at £549. We don't have the exact pricing for the options including in our review model, but we'd expect closer to £800. Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Deze onboard (gedeeld geheugen) GPU is geïntegreerd in de GM45-chipset (Montevina). Door twee extra shaders en een hogere kloksnelheid is hij veel sneller dan de oude GMA X3100. Toch is hij niet aan te raden voor gamers (DirectX 10 games niet speelbaar of alleen met zeer lage grafische instellingen). De geïntegreerde grafische video processor kan de CPU helpen bij het decoderen van HD video’s, om zo het vloeiend afspelen van bijvoorbeeld Blu-Ray films toch mogelijk te maken met een trage CPU.

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

14.00": Dit schermformaat wordt vooral gebruikt voor subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles. Voor alle drie types is dit formaat redelijk groot. De grootste verscheidenheid aan subnotebooks wordt vertegenwoordigd in deze klasse.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.

Acer: In 1976 werd het bedrijf in Taiwan opgericht onder de naam Multitech en in 1987 omgedoopt tot Acer of Acer Group. Het productassortiment omvat bijvoorbeeld laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitoren, tv's en computerrandapparatuur. Sinds 2007 is de groep gefuseerd met Gateway Inc. en Packard Bell, die ook hun eigen productlijnen voor laptops op de markt brengen.

Acer computers zijn ontworpen voor verschillende doeleinden, waaronder ultrabooks voor mobiel gebruik, gaming laptops voor gamers, betaalbare opties voor alledaagse taken en 2-in-1 converteerbare laptops voor veelzijdigheid. Het productportfolio van Acer omvat ook tablets die draagbare computer- en multimediamogelijkheden bieden.
