We wish it had an ExpressCard slot, which could come in handy if you ever want to add USB 3.0, for example, but overall it's a great set of features.

Though the Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q890 is a better performer in the 18-inch category, it's less attractive and costs $1,899. If you're looking to save a little cash and don't need the extra power, the Aspire 8943G is a good choice. However, until Acer resolves the sporadic wireless connectivity, we can't recommend this system. We'll update our review once a fix from the company becomes available.

Of course, the fast processor, large screen, Blu-ray drive and fancy design don’t come cheap, and many will baulk at the price tag Acer’s slapped on it. That said, it’s in line with similar 18.4in offerings, such as HP’s dv8-1110ea that retails for around the same price. If you want to ditch your desktop and can afford it, Acer’s Aspire Ethos 8943G is definitely worth a close look.

The new Acer Aspire AS8943G-6782 ($1,600 street) features a slimmer profile and aluminum-like casing, so now you have the looks to go along with the 18.4-inch widescreen, an Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, and a whopping 8GB of RAM. But it'll cost you more, too.

In exchange for portability, it offers some solid performance thanks to a quad core processor, fast graphics processor and larger high resolution display.

Acer: In 1976 werd het bedrijf in Taiwan opgericht onder de naam Multitech en in 1987 omgedoopt tot Acer of Acer Group. Het productassortiment omvat bijvoorbeeld laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitoren, tv's en computerrandapparatuur. Sinds 2007 is de groep gefuseerd met Gateway Inc. en Packard Bell, die ook hun eigen productlijnen voor laptops op de markt brengen.
Acer computers zijn ontworpen voor verschillende doeleinden, waaronder ultrabooks voor mobiel gebruik, gaming laptops voor gamers, betaalbare opties voor alledaagse taken en 2-in-1 converteerbare laptops voor veelzijdigheid. Het productportfolio van Acer omvat ook tablets die draagbare computer- en multimediamogelijkheden bieden.
Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850: De HD 5850 is een trager geklokte HD 5870 en heeft ook GDDR5 geheugen in het high-end segment. Hij is gebaseerd op de Desktop HD 5770 chip maar met een lagere kloksnelheid.
De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middenklasse DirectX11 videokaart met een stroomverbruik van 15-20 Watt. Ondersteund Eyevision (tot 6 monitors).

Intel Core i7:
820QM: De Core i7-820QM is een high-end quad core processor voor laptops die met Turbo mode van 1,73 naar 3,06GHz getilt kan worden. Daarmee combineert de processor de voordelen van een snelle single core processor en trage quad core CPU's.
Hyperthreading maakt het mogelijk om tot 8 Threads gelijktijdig uit te voeren.
720QM: De Core i7-720QM is de traagste Core i7 Quad Core uit 2009 en heeft kloksnelheden tussen de 1,6 en 2,8 GHz (door de Turbo mode). Daarmee combineert de processor de voordelen van een snelle single core processor en trage quad core CPU's. Vergeleken met snellere Core i7 mobiele CPU's heeft de 720QM slechts 6MB L3 Cache.
620M: De Core i7-620M is de snelste Dual-Core CPU voor laptops (op het moment van introductie, in Q1 2010). De 620M is geklokt tussen de 2,66 en 3,33 GHz dankzij de Turbo modus. Dankzij Hyperthreading kunnen er 4 threads tegelijkertijd uitgevoerd worden. In dit pakket heeft Intel ook nog een geïntegreerde GPU (GMA HD) gestoken en een geheugen controller. Een TDP van 35 Watt voor dit gehele pakket is dan ook nog vrij goed.
740QM: De Core i7 740QM is een high-end quad-core CPU voor laptops (uit 2010) met een relatief lage standaard kloksnelheid maar met hoge maximum frequentie (2,93 GHz) na het inschakelen van Turbo Boost (voor één core). Hij combineert daarmee de voordelen van een trage quad core en een snelle single core processor. Vergeleken met de snellere Core i7 mobiele CPU's heeft de 740QM maar 6MB L3 Cache.
Intel Core i5:
450M: Vergelijkbaar met de Core i5-520M maar zonder AES ondersteuning.
430M: De Core i5-430M is een middenklasse dual core CPU met een L2 cache van slechts 3MB (vergeleken met de i7-640M) en een kloksnelheid tussen 2,26 en 2,53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Verder heeft hij geen VT-D, trusted Execution of AES functionaliteiten. Dankzij Hyperthreading kan hij wel 4 threads gelijktijdig uitvoeren. Een geïntegreerde videokaart (Intel HD Graphics geklokt tussen 500-733MHz) en een DDR3 geheugen controller zitten bij in de processor verwerkt.
Intel Core i3:
330M: De Core i3-330M is een trager geklokte 350M en heeft geen Turbo Boost functie. De maximum kloksnelheid is 2,13 GHz. Dankzij Hyperthreading kunnen er 4 threads gelijktijdig uitgevoerd worden. Een geïntegreerde videokaart (GMA HD 3150) en een DDR3 geheugen controller zitten bij in processor verwerkt.

3.7 kg:
Normaal hebben laptops met een 17 inch schermdiagonaal dit gewicht. Dit is redelijk zwaar voor een 15 inch laptops maar aanvaardbaar voor toestellen bedoeld voor stationair gebruik.
4.6 kg:
Dit gewicht is typisch voor desktopvervangers met 17 inch schermen bedoeld voor stationair gebruik. Dit toestel is ongeschikt voor mobiel gebruik.
