If battery life doesn't matter to you, you have deep pockets and you want a full-gamut RGB screen, there's a lot of to appreciate here. But more mainstream users can find better value machines out there.

Sony's VAIO VGN-Z530N/B is the least expensive model in their Z series ultraportables, but that still comes with a high price tag. For this price, you get a system that has a high level of performance with dedicated graphics and excellent battery life. Be aware though that the system does not have an XP downgrade feature even though Sony advertises such a feature.

We’d like to see a faster boot time (or maybe the addition of Splashtop for quicker access to the Web) and slightly bigger touchpad buttons. Overall, though, we would be glad to use this notebook on a daily basis. If you can do without an optical drive, the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 is even faster and feels sturdier. But if you want a DVD drive for installing software, burning video, or watching movies, this is the machine to get.

Compact ultra-portable laptops tend to throw up as many compromises as solutions but the VAIO VGN-Z11WN/B is simply an amazing laptop. The keyboard can feel cramped at times but the individually mounted keys, which punch their way through the body of the chassis, have a fantastic typing action. When on the move you can switch between dedicated and integrated graphics, with the difference being an extra three hours in battery life. It has everything the average traveller needs, including a DVD rewriter built into its compact frame. Sony has set a new benchmark in ultra-slim laptops and one it may find difficult to beat itself.

From its arrival to our labs to the time where we had to pack it up for return, the Sony VAIO VGN-Z17GN has definitely lived up to our expectations. Its sleek design and attractive looks helped cement our opinion of this drool-worthy notebook, though we would like to point out that it's not 100% perfect (close though). From its cylindrical spine to the isolated keyboard design to the carbon fiber casing, the VGN-Z17GN is well, one heck of a notebook. We're still none too happy about the flimsy feeling screen, but with care, accidents can be avoided. Performance too is another good thing the VGN-Z17GN has in its favor. Our benchmarks showed the unit getting pretty decent scores with a slight oddity with regard to the Quake 4 benchmark.

The VGN-Z21MN/B is, to all intents and purposes, the big brother of Sony's 11.1in VGN-TT11WN/B. The 314 x 210 x 33mm dimensions conceal a generous 13.1in display and belie a headline grabbing weight of just 1.43kg. Sony's 13.1in Z-series redefines the ultraportable template, and justifies every single penny of its sizable price tag.

Review: Sony Vaio VGN-Z790, VGN-Z750

This Sony Vaio VGN-Z790 is a powerhouse. It is one of the fastest laptops that I have ever seen for its size. There are many 13” laptops such as the Dell XPS13, but it is not nearly as light as this product. All in all we are extremely pleased. This laptop definitely lived up to its name, as the executive laptop. We would have liked a better video card as this card is a little out of date now.

Overall we were very pleased the Sony Vaio VGN-Z890. It is one of the fastest mobile laptops for its weight-class and size. We were extremely pleased with the keyboard and design. This laptop was very similar to its predecessor, and we had to dock points for that. Due to the fact that this laptop is still an excellent choice for executive, and travelers.

The VGN-Z56GG/B outstrips the best of the netbook and ultraportable worlds for longevity, but can also switch gears and assume desktop duties with its reserves of power. With Intel's mobile Core i7 looming large, it might not be long before an even more flexible successor arrives. But right now, if your budget can stretch to it, the Z Series remains as good a laptop as we've had the pleasure of using.

If you are working with Office documents, Internet, if you do not place heavy demands on multimedia tasks such as video editing and finally if portability is your utmost priority, then go for the T11 VN/X. If performance is your top priority, then go for the Z21 VN/X.

Sony: Sony Corporation is een van de grootste Japanse elektronicabedrijven. Het bedrijf werd in 1946 opgericht onder een andere naam en produceerde aanvankelijk rijstkokers. Het bedrijf lanceerde de eerste transistorradio. In 1958 werd het bedrijf omgedoopt tot Sony. Sony is een combinatie van het Latijnse woord sonus (geluid) en het Engelse woord sonny (kleine jongen). Tegenwoordig is de core business consumentenelektronica. Het bedrijf houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling, het ontwerp, de fabricage en de verkoop van elektronische apparatuur, instrumenten, apparaten, gameconsoles en software. Sony is actief in de volgende segmenten: gaming- en netwerkdiensten, muziek, afbeeldingen, home entertainment en geluid, beeldproducten en -oplossingen, mobiele communicatie, halfgeleiders, financiële diensten en andere.
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS: In tegenstelling tot de 9300M G heeft de GS slechts 8 unified shaders, maar wel een hogere kloksnelheid. Daarom zouden de prestaties volgens Nvidia gelijk moeten zijn. De kaart ondersteunt Hybrid-SLI (GeForceBoost en HybridPower) met de Nvidia 9100M G en PureVideo HD (VP3).
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Deze onboard (gedeeld geheugen) GPU is geïntegreerd in de GM45-chipset (Montevina). Door twee extra shaders en een hogere kloksnelheid is hij veel sneller dan de oude GMA X3100. Toch is hij niet aan te raden voor gamers (DirectX 10 games niet speelbaar of alleen met zeer lage grafische instellingen). De geïntegreerde grafische video processor kan de CPU helpen bij het decoderen van HD video’s, om zo het vloeiend afspelen van bijvoorbeeld Blu-Ray films toch mogelijk te maken met een trage CPU.
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M G: Verbeterde 8400M GS chip die is gebakken op het 65nm formaat en iets betere prestaties kan leveren door enkele kleine optimalisaties.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.
P9500: De P9500 is een snelle processor uit het middensegment voor laptops en is eigenlijk een Core 2 DUo T9400 met een TDP van 25 Watt.
P8600: Snel maar nog geen overprijsde dual core CPU. Voor de meeste games en multimedia applicaties voldoende en door de TDP van 25W ook bruikbaar voor kleinere laptops.
P8400: Processor uit de middenklasse met een TDP van 25 Watt. Voor high end gamers zijn de prestaties niet hoog genoeg (voor eersteklasse videokaarten).
P9600: De P9600 is een middenklasse dual core CPU van de Core 2 Duo reeks en vergelijkbaar met de T9550 (behalve dan dat deze een lager stroomverbruik heeft, namelijk 25 vs 35 Watt). De prestaties van de P9600 volstaan voor de meeste applicaties en games in 2009.
P8700: Mid-range dual core processor met 3MB level 3 cache en een TDP van 25 Watt.
P9700: Erg snelle dual core CPU en met 28 Watt TDP ook energie efficiënt. Vergeleken met andere P-modellen, heeft de P9700 een L2 cache van 6MB.
P8800: Mid-range dual core processor met 3MB Level 3 Cache en een TDP van 25 Watt.

Dit gewicht is typisch voor erg grote tablets, subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles met een 11-13 inch schermdiagonaal.
2 kg:
Gewoonlijk hebben subnotebooks, ultrabooks en redelijk lichte laptops met een 12-16 inch schermdiagonaal dit gewicht.
85.08%: Dit is een score die boven gemiddeld is. Wel moet je er bij bedenken dat ongeveer 10-15% van alle notebooks een betere score krijgt.
