The Sony Vaio AW11 is so big and unwieldy that it's worth remembering that you could get a more powerful desktop PC for the same price with an LED monitor that would put the AW11's screen to shame. This is the first time we've seen a dedicated numeric pad alongside as well, however, and usability proved excellent. In relation to regular laptops, the touchpad is huge, and offers an easy and accurate way of navigation. While our review model featured a traditional 300GB hard drive, top of the range AW's feature both 128GB flash drives and 500GB hard drives, offering fast access speeds and generous storage space.

VAT) is the mid-range model, offering enough features to keep most users entertained for years. The 18.4-inch screen is one of the best we've seen on any laptop, offering vivid colours. Blacks are also accurately dark. It's a Super-TFT panel, so there are some inevitable reflections in brighter conditions, but it's a price well worth paying. Photos and movies look stunning, with high-definition (HD) films in particular reproduced in their full glory. External displays can also easily be connected using the high-definition digital HDMI or analogue VGA ports. If you can afford the high price tag, the AW11Z/B is without peer. You'll find a perfect blend of performance and features, and the large screen makes the most of your HD movies.

Unfortunately,this is not the case here, as the AW-17GU comes in at a whopping price tag of S$6999. That's a lot of money to spend on a DTR and we're unsure if it's actually worth it. While Apple naysayers tend to put down Apple's products by complaining about the so-called "Apple tax", it's sometimes strange to find Sony getting away with the same thing. To further prove our point, we also checked out the Sony VAIO VGN-AR18GP DTR model that was top of the line two years back which was the first notebook to feature a Blu-ray drive.

The new VAIO VGN-AW235J/B is a surprise release from the company that makes for an extremely capable high definition media platform at a very reasonable price. While it might still be more expensive than many other desktop replacements, it is still one of the cheapest to feature a Blu-ray burner. Of course, the 18.4-inch screen makes it less portable than those using 17-inch screens and Sony does have fewer peripheral connectors than similar equipped laptops.

As well as boasting a diagonal width of 18.4in and a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,080, it uses the same RGB LED technology that so impressed us in the Dell Studio XPS 16. The RGB LED screen, Blu-ray writer and awesome specification result in the best all-round desktop replacement on the market.

With an 18.4-inch screen, this is one serious slab of Sony technology and it has a price tag to match: £1,100. Value for money is subjective with a laptop like this, but there's no denying the Sony Vaio VGN-AW31M/H is a large, beautiful desktop replacement. The specification falls short of stunning considering the price, but it's still a very capable performer and few laptops this massive look as lovely as this

Now there's a new monster model to up the ante, the cheaper and more balanced, 18.4-inch Sony Vaio VGN-AW41MF/H. It will set you back about £1,000. The Vaio VGN-AW41MF/H is a luscious behemoth with plenty of muscle, and comes at a more reasonable price than some similar Sony machines. We'd heap more praise on it if its screen were crisper, but that doesn't detract too much from a highly capable desktop-replacement laptop.

Sony: Sony Corporation is een van de grootste Japanse elektronicabedrijven. Het bedrijf werd in 1946 opgericht onder een andere naam en produceerde aanvankelijk rijstkokers. Het bedrijf lanceerde de eerste transistorradio. In 1958 werd het bedrijf omgedoopt tot Sony. Sony is een combinatie van het Latijnse woord sonus (geluid) en het Engelse woord sonny (kleine jongen). Tegenwoordig is de core business consumentenelektronica. Het bedrijf houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling, het ontwerp, de fabricage en de verkoop van elektronische apparatuur, instrumenten, apparaten, gameconsoles en software. Sony is actief in de volgende segmenten: gaming- en netwerkdiensten, muziek, afbeeldingen, home entertainment en geluid, beeldproducten en -oplossingen, mobiele communicatie, halfgeleiders, financiële diensten en andere.
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS: In tegenstelling tot de 9300M G heeft de GS slechts 8 unified shaders, maar wel een hogere kloksnelheid. Daarom zouden de prestaties volgens Nvidia gelijk moeten zijn. De kaart ondersteunt Hybrid-SLI (GeForceBoost en HybridPower) met de Nvidia 9100M G en PureVideo HD (VP3).
De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Opvolger van de 8600M GT en door het kleinere formaat van 65nm heeft de chip een hogere kloksnelheid (en is daardoor sneller) maar wel hetzelfde energieverbruik. Voor de rest beschikt hij over een verbeterde video processor (VP3) en HybridPower om de accu te sparen (in combinatie met de 9100M G).

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.
P8400: Processor uit de middenklasse met een TDP van 25 Watt. Voor high end gamers zijn de prestaties niet hoog genoeg (voor eersteklasse videokaarten).
T9600: High-end dual core CPU en vergelijkbaar met de Core 2 Duo P9700 maar met een hoger stroomverbruik (35W versus 28W). Zou moeten volstaan voor alle games uit 2009.
T9400: De T9400 is een snelle processor uit het middensegment voor laptops en is eigenlijk een Core 2 Duo P9500 met een hogere TDP van 35 Watt.
P8600: Snel maar nog geen overprijsde dual core CPU. Voor de meeste games en multimedia applicaties voldoende en door de TDP van 25W ook bruikbaar voor kleinere laptops.
T9800: High end dual core processor voor laptops met 6 MB L2 Cache geklokt op 2,93 GHz. Erg geschikt voor games (uit 2009) en applicaties (zeker single threaded).
P8700: Mid-range dual core processor met 3MB level 3 cache en een TDP van 25 Watt.
T6500: Instap niveau Penryn dual-core CPU met een level 2 cache van 2MB en een FSB van 800 MHz. Vergelijkbaar met de 6570 maar zonder VT-x.
T9900: Snelste (in 2009) Core 2 Duo processor en vergelijkbaar met de Core 2 Extreme X9100 (zonder de vrije multiplier), maar een met een lagere TDP en prijskaartje. Erg geschikt voor games en veeleisende applicaties.
P7450: Instap niveau Core 2 Duo processor met een Level 2 Cache van 3MB en door zijn TDP van 25 Watt geschikt voor 13" laptops.

79.37%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
