The 13-inch Samsung Series 5 535U3C-A01 is a great little Ultrabook competitor that manages to keep its price low thanks to AMD innards. It’s slim, sleek, light and very well-built. It offers a great user experience and its screen is a cut above most budget laptops. However, mediocre performance and average battery life mean you may be better off looking at pricier alternatives, especially those offering Windows 8 and touch.

You shouldn't write off the Samsung Series 5 NP535U3C just because it has an AMD processor instead of an Intel processor. Though Intel's Ultrabooks may outperform the AMD Series 5 overall, the Series 5's integrated Radeon HD 7500G graphics are slightly more impressive than Intel's HD 4000 integrated graphics. In addition, the AMD Series 5 is cheaper than its Intel counterpart, and it has excellent speakers for the category. So if you're looking for an ultraportable multimedia machine - and you're not too picky about startup time or branding - the Series 5 deserves a look.

At £500, it’s tempting to forgive the Samsung its faults. It is, after all, at least £100 less than the same machine with an Intel chip, and cheaper than any other ultrabook around. While it seems - superficially - like a bargain, the price is actually dead right: it’s better than a premium netbook but not as fast as a fully modern ultra-light. It’s an excellent budget laptop, but don’t expect much more or you might be disappointed.

AMD Radeon HD 7500G:

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

13.3": Dit schermformaat zou een “groot subnotebook-formaat” genoemd kunnen worden. Het voordeel is dat de subnotebook bescheiden afmetingen heeft en deze kan makkelijk vervoerd worden. Het kleine scherm heeft verder het voordeel dat het weinig stroom behoeft wat de batterijlooptijd vergroot en daardoor ook de mobiliteit. Het nadeel is dat het lezen van tekst erg vermoeiend is aan de ogen. Hoge resoluties kunnen nauwelijks gebruikt worden.
