Dell's Adamo may be the most desirable laptop we've seen, but it doesn't come cheap. Dell's Adamo 13 (£1649 inc. VAT) brings luxury to the laptop market and may be the most visually arresting and exquisitely made laptop we've seen. It's impossible not to be amazed by the Adamo 13's craftsmanship and attention to detail. However, it is far more than just a pretty face and also offers great usability, for those who can afford it.

In a war of looks and style, the Dell Adamo will forever stand out in our books as one of the sexiest notebooks around. While it's certainly pretty looking enough, we're just disappointed that Dell didn't actually take on the gloss-free path. Still, we like that Dell has spent quite a bit of effort in designing the Adamo, and it shows in the aluminum unibody design, the exquisite thin build and the fantastic keyboard. Even the reluctant looking addition of a metal plaque at the bottom fits in well with the whole theme and concept of the notebook. Discounting the missing 3G connectivity, we're happy to conclude that the Dell Adamo still has enough to knock your socks off, if you can afford it of course.

Dell haters and Apple enthusiasts will likely write it off as so much Round Rock, Texas hooey, but never before have we seen a machine elicit the sort of envious, drooling stares unconsciously displayed by our tech-loving colleagues when they caught wind of this dazzling little laptop. And it’s a very decent performer to boot (at least as far as ultra-thin notebooks go). All of that said, who are we kidding? Here's the deal: the Adamo is really expensive. Not just expensive for a PC. Not just expensive for an ultralight. Not just expensive for an underpowered computer. It's just expensive. Expensive in the sense that you're being charged a lot of money for something that seems like it shouldn't cost so much.

When you boil it down, it's not necessarily a "bad" computer -- just not a particularly good one. If you're a basic user with simple needs, this will do pretty much everything you want, but if you're a basic user with simple needs, why are you spending so much money on a PC? You could get a dozen (or more) computers that do exactly the same thing for far less money -- hell, even in Dell's own ecosystem there are myriad choices.

Tired of seeing one professed Apple MacBook Air killer after another—the Lenovo Thinkpad X301, Voodoo Envy 133, and Sony VAIO VGN-Z590, to name a few—Dell decided to offer its own take on what a luxury brand should look like. The Dell Adamo (derived from the Latin word that means "to fall in love with"), is elegant in its thin profile and luxuriously intoxicating to look at. Despite its good looks, the Adamo is not going to "kill" anything, though it isn't without merit. The Dell Adamo lives up to its name in design, but with its lackluster performance and battery scores, it isn't for performance seekers.

While we were playing with the Adamo, close by Dell staff took the opportunity (several times) to point out that it’s thinner than the MacBook Air. It is thinner than the MBA at its thickest point, but you would hardly know that from looking at it as the MacBook Air has a tapered chassis. It’s also half a pound heavier. Unlike the Air, the Adamo comes with a 64-bit copy of Windows Vista installed. Unfortunately Vista does not run all that well on low-end systems, and there’s no option to customize the Adamo with an XP downgrade or Linux. Potential buyers might want to wait until Windows 7 is released, which will work better with slower systems and even netbooks. On the other hand, the Adamo seems to run Vista fairly smoothly, partly thanks to the quick solid state drive.

Dell's Adamo Admire is about a highly attractive ultrathin laptop with a reasonable $999 price tag. Many who might consider a MacBook Air but don't want to spend as much would likely choose the Adamo simply based on its style and cost. Performance is good even if the battery life isn't quite up to the ultraportable market these days. Items such as the solid state drive and high quality diplay are a nice touch and atypical of this price range.

Dell: Dell is een Amerikaanse fabrikant (gevestigd in Texas) van computerhardware, opgericht in 1984 en is een van de grootste internationale fabrikanten, zowel qua marktaandeel als qua notebookmodellen. De productlijn omvat desktops, notebooks, opslagsystemen, monitors, servers, printers, consumentenelektronica en randapparatuur. Dell biedt laptops die geschikt zijn voor verschillende toepassingen, zoals zakelijke laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables en werkstations. De zakelijke laptops uit de Latitude en Precision series van Dell zijn een optie voor professionele gebruikers en bedrijven.

In 2023 had Dell een marktaandeel van ongeveer 17% in de wereldwijde verkoop van pc's en stond daarmee op de derde plaats, na Lenovo en HP.

Voor gameliefhebbers is er Dell's Alienware merk voor gaming notebooks.

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: De Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (soms ook GMA X4500 HD genoemd) is een DirectX 10 onboard videokaart voor de GM45, GE45 en GS45 chipset van het Centrino 2 platform (Montevina). De chip heeft geen eigen geheugen, maar kan dynamisch gebruik maken van het RAM geheugen (tot 384MB).  

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Deze onboard (gedeeld geheugen) GPU is geïntegreerd in de GM45-chipset (Montevina). Door twee extra shaders en een hogere kloksnelheid is hij veel sneller dan de oude GMA X3100. Toch is hij niet aan te raden voor gamers (DirectX 10 games niet speelbaar of alleen met zeer lage grafische instellingen). De geïntegreerde grafische video processor kan de CPU helpen bij het decoderen van HD video’s, om zo het vloeiend afspelen van bijvoorbeeld Blu-Ray films toch mogelijk te maken met een trage CPU.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

Dit gewicht is typisch voor erg grote tablets, subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles met een 11-13 inch schermdiagonaal.

1.84 kg:

Gewoonlijk hebben subnotebooks, ultrabooks en redelijk lichte laptops met een 12-16 inch schermdiagonaal dit gewicht.

77.11%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
