We're quite fond of the Toshiba Portege R700: it's very slim, incredibly light, has an internal optical drive and a capable battery for just under a grand. Sweet. If you're looking for an ultralight among 13" models, the R700 stands out for value and portability. Sure, it's not clad in metal like the 13" macBook Pro but it's much lighter and won't give you hot flashes when using it on your lap. In fact, it's as light as the MacBook Air, but more powerful. Toshiba offers enough CPU options to suit everyone from the budget conscious to the need for speed crowd, though even the top configuration can't come close to dethroning the speed king Sony Vaio Z.

While the battery life may not have lived up to the 8 hour claim, the Portege R705 as a whole is an impressive notebook that includes a durable body, light weight and thin body as well as enough power to satisfy most users at an equally impressive price point. The Toshiba Portégé R705-P25 is basically your poor man's Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS. Together, they're the lightest duo with 13-inch screens and built-in optical drives, except one costs half as much as the other. The R705-P25 is a beautifully-made ultraportable and ideal for those who have busy travelling schedules, but are reluctant to sacrifice all the amenities of a full size laptop. I would still recommend the Asus U30Jc-1A in this price range, though. It has more graphics power and ships with a bigger battery, even if it is almost two pounds heavier.

Toshiba’s Portege R705 is an unexpected addition to the company’s ultraportable range. Based on the Portege R700 unveiled as part of Toshiba’s 25th anniversary for notebooks, the R705-P25 is a Best Buy exclusive with an MRSP of $889.99 but a street price that scrapes in at under $800. That makes it the cheapest Portege to date, and Toshiba would like us to remember it’s also the lightest 13.3-inch notebook with an integrated optical drive (outside of Japan, at least).

Flat out, consumers haven't been able to get such a feature-packed ultraportable at such an affordable price until now, and the cheaper price tag doesn't result in a shoddy build as we expected it might. If you're looking for a thin and light 13-inch laptop under $900, the R705 beats all the others on the market – and that's not something we say often. Hey, Toshiba, how do you feel about celebrating every birthday this way?

Business up front, party in the back. It’s an apt description for the R705, but throwing it in with mullets just feels wrong, so let’s call it a solid pair of khakis instead. Sharp at work, comfortable at play, and affordable enough for everyone. With the R705, Toshiba succeeds at bringing the build quality, power and no-nonsense styling of machines formerly reserved for business elites down to the masses, without clipping the essentials.

In our tests, the Toshiba Portégé R705 stacked up nicely against the competition.  In our general desktop workloads, as well as gaming/multi-media benchmarks, it was shining even brighter. Our $929.99 configuration managed to beat our expectations from a performance standpoint, with even the Intel HD integrated graphics core performing better than expected, all things considered. On a 13.3" ultraportable that's as mobile as this machine, you generally don't expect to do a lot multimedia muscle.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is een Japans conglomeraat of technologiegroep. Het bedrijf werd opgericht in 1939 en in 1978 werd Toshiba de officiële bedrijfsnaam. De producten en diensten van het bedrijf omvatten energie, industriële en sociale infrastructuursystemen, liften en roltrappen, elektronische componenten, halfgeleiders, harde schijven, printers, batterijen, verlichting, logistiek en informatietechnologie. Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). 460M: De Intel Core i5-460M is een high-end dual core CPU voor laptops en heeft een kloksnelheid van 2,53 GHz tot 2,8 GHz (door Turbo Mode). Elke Core is gebaseerd op de Nehalem (Westmere) micro architectuur. Hyperthreading zorgt er voor dat deze Dual Core CPU toch vier threads gelijktijdig kan verwerken. Vergeleken met de Core i5-540M, ondersteund de 460M geen AES, VT-d en Trusted Execution functies en is hij na de inschakeling van Turbo Boost minder snel (2,8 versus 3,06 GHz).
