More than that, we can't help but look at the better Core i3 and Blu-ray deals to be had. For instance, the $800 Gateway NV79C35u has the same Core i3 processor and Blu-ray drive as the EC, though it doesn't have discrete graphics.

EN→NL Archive.org versionAfter spending several weeks with the VAIO EC my overall opinion is that this is a good notebook for a reasonable price. Our review unit is one of the older configurations that is still available in retail outlets (including many SonyStyle brick-and-mortar stores found in shopping malls), but newer configurations offer better processors for a starting price of $750. It's a shame we couldn't test one of those newer configurations, because the slower Pentium-class processor and slower hard drive in our test system proved to be less than impressive. On the bright side, the AMD ATI dedicated graphics give this desktop replacement notebook all the power it needs to handle multimedia applications and some modern games. The build quality feels a little weak in spots, but the Sony VAIO EC makes a fine multimedia notebook if you're on a budget ... and it's even more impressive if you buy the newer configurations.

There's no denying that the keyboard is top-notch, and there's enough muscle here for both productivity chores and mainstream games. However, there are better deals out there. A Dell Inspiron 17R with similar specs (Core i3 CPU, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5740 graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive) can be had for $50 less, as can a Toshiba L670 with a more powerful Core i5 processor, integrated graphics, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. We wish the screen had better viewing angles and that the speakers were more powerful, but overall the VAIO EC is an attractive notebook that provides solid performance for the price.

Sony: Sony Corporation is een van de grootste Japanse elektronicabedrijven. Het bedrijf werd in 1946 opgericht onder een andere naam en produceerde aanvankelijk rijstkokers. Het bedrijf lanceerde de eerste transistorradio. In 1958 werd het bedrijf omgedoopt tot Sony. Sony is een combinatie van het Latijnse woord sonus (geluid) en het Engelse woord sonny (kleine jongen). Tegenwoordig is de core business consumentenelektronica. Het bedrijf houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling, het ontwerp, de fabricage en de verkoop van elektronische apparatuur, instrumenten, apparaten, gameconsoles en software. Sony is actief in de volgende segmenten: gaming- en netwerkdiensten, muziek, afbeeldingen, home entertainment en geluid, beeldproducten en -oplossingen, mobiele communicatie, halfgeleiders, financiële diensten en andere.
De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650: Middenklasse DirectX11 videokaart met een stroomverbruik van 15-20 Watt. Ondersteund Eyevision (tot 6 monitors).
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

Intel Core i5:
520M: De Core i5-520M heeft slechts 3MB L3 Cache (vergeleken met de i7-640M) en heeft een kloksnelheid tussen de 2,4 en 2,93 GHz (Turbo Mode). Met Hyperthreading kunnen er 4 threads gelijktijdig uitgevoerd worden. Een geïntegreerde videokaart (GMA HD 3150) en een DDR3 geheugen controller zitten bij in processor verwerkt.
430M: De Core i5-430M is een middenklasse dual core CPU met een L2 cache van slechts 3MB (vergeleken met de i7-640M) en een kloksnelheid tussen 2,26 en 2,53 GHz (Turbo Mode). Verder heeft hij geen VT-D, trusted Execution of AES functionaliteiten. Dankzij Hyperthreading kan hij wel 4 threads gelijktijdig uitvoeren. Een geïntegreerde videokaart (Intel HD Graphics geklokt tussen 500-733MHz) en een DDR3 geheugen controller zitten bij in de processor verwerkt.
520UM: De Core i5-520UM is een energie efficiënte ultra low voltage processor voor laptops. Wanneer hij gebruik maakt van Turbo Boost kan hij tot 1,86 GHz geklokt worden. Dankzij Hyperthreading kunnen er 4 threads gelijktijdig uitgevoerd worden. Een geïntegreerde videokaart (Intel HD Graphics 166-500 MHz) en een DDR3-800 geheugen controller zitten bij in processor verwerkt. Vergeleken met de Core i7-620UM heeft de 520UM een kleinere Level 3 cache en een lagere Turbo Boost kloksnelheid.
460M: De Intel Core i5-460M is een high-end dual core CPU voor laptops en heeft een kloksnelheid van 2,53 GHz tot 2,8 GHz (door Turbo Mode). Elke Core is gebaseerd op de Nehalem (Westmere) micro architectuur. Hyperthreading zorgt er voor dat deze Dual Core CPU toch vier threads gelijktijdig kan verwerken. Vergeleken met de Core i5-540M, ondersteund de 460M geen AES, VT-d en Trusted Execution functies en is hij na de inschakeling van Turbo Boost minder snel (2,8 versus 3,06 GHz).
Intel Core i3:
330M: De Core i3-330M is een trager geklokte 350M en heeft geen Turbo Boost functie. De maximum kloksnelheid is 2,13 GHz. Dankzij Hyperthreading kunnen er 4 threads gelijktijdig uitgevoerd worden. Een geïntegreerde videokaart (GMA HD 3150) en een DDR3 geheugen controller zitten bij in processor verwerkt.
Intel Pentium:
P6100: De Pentium P6100 is een instap niveau CPU gebaseerd op de Arrandale core. Vergeleken met de Celeron P4600 heeft de P6100 iets hogere prestaties door een snellere System Bus en vergrote Level 3 cache. Hij heeft echter geen VT-x.

Dit gewicht is typisch voor laptops met een 14-16 inch schermdiagonaal.
3.5 kg:
Normaal hebben laptops met een 17 inch schermdiagonaal dit gewicht. Dit is redelijk zwaar voor een 15 inch laptops maar aanvaardbaar voor toestellen bedoeld voor stationair gebruik.
75.22%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
