If you can do without the dual solid state drives and Blu-ray drive, you can pick up the VAIO TT for a far more reasonable $2,094, although you’ll have to settle for a slower 1.2-GHz processor and 2GB of RAM. If you’re shrugging off the recession, and you want to be able to brag that you own an ultraportable with Blu-ray capabilities and one of the largest SSD capacities available, the Sony VAIO VGN-TT198UBX will satisfy. It offers butter-smooth performance and lots of endurance. In general, though, we prefer the Sony VAIO Z series, because it’s only about half a pound heavier while offering discrete graphics and a larger screen and keyboard.

Now Sony has brought out an updated model range, the TT, an ultraportable which is so compact that at first glance looks like a netbook. A stylish ultraportable with superb build quality and a good feature set, but for the hefty price we would expect to see an even better set of features, i.e. more USB ports, a better webcam and more powerful graphics.

The VAIO TT really does offer road warriors that perfect mixture of performance, battery and portability. As well as the Bluetooth and WiFi draft-n, Sony offer a Sprint EV-DO Rev.A WWAN option (for a $59.99 monthly fee); work while you travel and then, when you’re at the hotel, plug the TT in to the TV and watch a movie rather than paying for the usual lousy selection. Vista is a chore but, courtesy of the SSDs, it’s at least manageable. What might be less so is the price. Most people would call the entry level TT expensive; the superlative-spec VGN-TT190UBX topples that over into astronomical.

While our recent review of the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 highlighted the case of a netbook that wanted to be a notebook, the TT series takes the opposite approach, cramming a fully featured notebook into a form factor the same size as most of today's netbooks. The chassis measures just 200mm x 279mm and is 23.5mm deep at its thinnest point. The Sony Vaio TT is small, light and portable while still packing enough power for almost all of today's applications. However, the price tag could prove offputting to many buyers.

But you pay a lot for these benefits at a time when netbooks - even ones with on-board HSDPA - can do much the same job for a fraction of the cost. Sony: Sony Corporation is een van de grootste Japanse elektronicabedrijven. Het bedrijf werd in 1946 opgericht onder een andere naam en produceerde aanvankelijk rijstkokers. Het bedrijf lanceerde de eerste transistorradio. In 1958 werd het bedrijf omgedoopt tot Sony. Sony is een combinatie van het Latijnse woord sonus (geluid) en het Engelse woord sonny (kleine jongen). Tegenwoordig is de core business consumentenelektronica. Het bedrijf houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling, het ontwerp, de fabricage en de verkoop van elektronische apparatuur, instrumenten, apparaten, gameconsoles en software. Sony is actief in de volgende segmenten: gaming- en netwerkdiensten, muziek, afbeeldingen, home entertainment en geluid, beeldproducten en -oplossingen, mobiele communicatie, halfgeleiders, financiële diensten en andere.
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Deze onboard (gedeeld geheugen) GPU is geïntegreerd in de GM45-chipset (Montevina). Door twee extra shaders en een hogere kloksnelheid is hij veel sneller dan de oude GMA X3100. Toch is hij niet aan te raden voor gamers (DirectX 10 games niet speelbaar of alleen met zeer lage grafische instellingen). De geïntegreerde grafische video processor kan de CPU helpen bij het decoderen van HD video’s, om zo het vloeiend afspelen van bijvoorbeeld Blu-Ray films toch mogelijk te maken met een trage CPU.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: De Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (soms ook GMA X4500 HD genoemd) is een DirectX 10 onboard videokaart voor de GM45, GE45 en GS45 chipset van het Centrino 2 platform (Montevina). De chip heeft geen eigen geheugen, maar kan dynamisch gebruik maken van het RAM geheugen (tot 384MB).

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

Dit gewicht is typisch voor erg grote tablets, subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles met een 11-13 inch schermdiagonaal.

76.35%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
