The VAIO FW is a great step forward for Sony, and a worthy competitor to the Dell Studio 15 or even the Toshiba A305. The design is great, but more importantly the build quality is excellent. It feels solid, with a reasonably firm screen cover and keyboard that feels as if a child could walk across it. Performance was more than adequate in every area except 3D performance, but hopefully Sony decides to offer a higher performing graphics card as an option at a later date. The only real flaw that stood out to me was the screen, with its uneven backlight. Hopefully this is a preproduction unit flaw, and not something that shows up on shipping models.

EN→NL Archive.org versionThe Vaio performs well across the board. It's a well balanced machine, suitable for many uses, affordable and good looking. We do have some complaints, but nothing big. So should you get one? Well, it depends. In case you're looking at $1,000 15.4-inch machines, the Vaio will offer you an extra inch of screen real estate and a higher resolution in a very compact package. Let's face it, if you're planning to carry your notebook around all day long, you'll get a 12 or 13-inch model to begin with. If not, the 16.4-inch Vaio is just marginally larger and heavier than a 15.4-inch notebook and it's a very tempting alternative. If amateur video is your game, or if you just watch a lot of movies on your notebook, it will be great.

The Sony VAIO FW139E/H was a good purchase for me. The features, build, and price were right, and I am content with the purchase. It is more than enough for any engineering CAD applications I will be using for undergraduate studies, and is great for multitasking and mild gaming. The VAIO FW's CPU and FSB speed, 3GB of RAM, and Radeon GPU are a wonderful combo for mobile power. The aspect ratio of the screen is perfect for entertainment. The build quality is fantastic; Sony does not deliver anything but their best in hardware. The downside is insignificant. For someone looking for the best battery life, being able to play the latest game on High settings, or good sound reproduction, this is not the laptop they should look into. This laptop is fine for the mild power user who still wants portability. Of course, my vision of portability probably differs from someone who finds 6.4lbs heavy. It is nothing like the large VAIO AR, however. The VAIO FW is an FZ in size, and half-way between an FZ and AR in power.

Several months ago, one of our favorite retail laptops was the Sony Vaio FW480J/T. Besides offering no-hassle Blu-ray playback and a large if not full-HD 1,600x900-pixel 16.4-inch screen, it had decent discrete graphics that could handle many mainstream games. With Blu-ray playback, a large screen and decent discrete graphics, the Sony Vaio FW560F/T is a very compelling sub-$1,000 multimedia notebook.

Sony: Sony Corporation is een van de grootste Japanse elektronicabedrijven. Het bedrijf werd in 1946 opgericht onder een andere naam en produceerde aanvankelijk rijstkokers. Het bedrijf lanceerde de eerste transistorradio. In 1958 werd het bedrijf omgedoopt tot Sony. Sony is een combinatie van het Latijnse woord sonus (geluid) en het Engelse woord sonny (kleine jongen). Tegenwoordig is de core business consumentenelektronica. Het bedrijf houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling, het ontwerp, de fabricage en de verkoop van elektronische apparatuur, instrumenten, apparaten, gameconsoles en software. Sony is actief in de volgende segmenten: gaming- en netwerkdiensten, muziek, afbeeldingen, home entertainment en geluid, beeldproducten en -oplossingen, mobiele communicatie, halfgeleiders, financiële diensten en andere.
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Deze onboard (gedeeld geheugen) GPU is geïntegreerd in de GM45-chipset (Montevina). Door twee extra shaders en een hogere kloksnelheid is hij veel sneller dan de oude GMA X3100. Toch is hij niet aan te raden voor gamers (DirectX 10 games niet speelbaar of alleen met zeer lage grafische instellingen). De geïntegreerde grafische video processor kan de CPU helpen bij het decoderen van HD video’s, om zo het vloeiend afspelen van bijvoorbeeld Blu-Ray films toch mogelijk te maken met een trage CPU.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470: In principe is de HD 3470 simpelweg een HD 3450 met een hogere kloksnelheid en is hij de opvolger van de HD 2400 XT, maar dan met DirectX 10 ondersteuning en door het 55nm formaat met een hogere kloksnelheid. Avivo HD video functie maken het decoderen van HD video’s mogelijk.
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650: Dit is een middenklasse videokaart, die op een 55nm procedé gemaakt is en waarschijnlijk boven de HD 2600 / HD 2700 geklasseerd kan worden. Vanwege de Avivo video engine kan de videokaart de processor ondersteunen met verscheidene videotaken (waaronder HD Video).
De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650: De Mobility Radeon 4650 is gebaseerd op de Desktop 4650 architectuur, maar heeft een lagere kloksnelheid van het geheugen en core. Afhankelijk van de core kloksnelheid (450-550 MHz mogelijk) en het gebruikte geheugen (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 met 600-800 MHz mogelijk), kan de HD 4650 erg verschillende resultaten tonen. Het stroomverbruik van de chip opzich varieert tussen de 15 en 25W. Heeft de Avivo HD video functionaliteiten.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.
T9600: High-end dual core CPU en vergelijkbaar met de Core 2 Duo P9700 maar met een hoger stroomverbruik (35W versus 28W). Zou moeten volstaan voor alle games uit 2009.
T9400: De T9400 is een snelle processor uit het middensegment voor laptops en is eigenlijk een Core 2 Duo P9500 met een hogere TDP van 35 Watt.
P8400: Processor uit de middenklasse met een TDP van 25 Watt. Voor high end gamers zijn de prestaties niet hoog genoeg (voor eersteklasse videokaarten).
T5800: Instap niveau dual core processor gebaseerd op de Merom core zonder virtualisatie ondersteuning en een lage maximum temperatuur.
T9550: De T9550 is een middenklasse dual core CPU uit de Core 2 Duo reeks en is vergelijkbaar met de P9600 (op de hogere TDP van de T9550 na - 35 vs 25 W). De prestaties van de T9550 zijn voldoende voor de meeste applicaties en games uit 2009.
T6400: Instap niveau dual core processor gebaseerd op de Penryn Core met slechts 2MB level 2 cache en een lage kloksnelheid.
P7350: Instap niveau Core 2 Duo processor met 3 MB Level 2 Cache en door zijn TDP van 25 Watt ook geschikt voor 13" laptops.
P8700: Mid-range dual core processor met 3MB level 3 cache en een TDP van 25 Watt.
P7450: Instap niveau Core 2 Duo processor met een Level 2 Cache van 3MB en door zijn TDP van 25 Watt geschikt voor 13" laptops.

Dit gewicht is representatief voor laptops met een 15 inch schermdiagonaal.
3.3 kg:
Normaal hebben laptops met een 17 inch schermdiagonaal dit gewicht. Dit is redelijk zwaar voor een 15 inch laptops maar aanvaardbaar voor toestellen bedoeld voor stationair gebruik.
76.26%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
