Samsung's first Series 9 was a stunning piece of kit, offering slim, light and powerful computing before the word ultrabook had even slipped out of Intel's mouth. The new Samsung Series 9 has received a boost in power over its predecessor as well as a considerable makeover. Sadly though, its high price makes it difficult to recommend over similarly performing ultrabooks.

It's such a shame that the Samsung can't squeeze a bit more speed from its processor or more life out of its battery, as it is a rather nice laptop. The backlit keyboard and non-reflective screen make it very easy to use in all kinds of environments. We especially like the ports at the side which can be hidden away when not in use.

This is a machine very much for the professional show-off to be seen with – a salesman or a designer. If you’re not in this group, you still might appreciate the power and weight combination on offer here. I was extremely sceptical of the Series 9 concept to begin with, as I am wary of all “look-at-me!” designs. But by the end of the review period, it made perfect sense. It's a nice machine to use.

The Samsung Series 9 2012 is a great laptop with a stunning design. It’s not always easy to see how things really “feel” in the real world when all you have are photos and videos, and Samsung should do anything it can to put these in people’s hands. It is amazing to see that a 15” laptop can be so light (3.63lbs), and yet feel so well built.

Much like the 13in version, the 15in version of the Series 9 is a little marvel. The thin profile and relatively light weight make it feel like a much smaller laptop than it is, and it's easy to carry to and from the office on a regular basis. It's stylish, it's quite comfortable to use, it runs quietly, and its performance is good for most typical office software, and even media-centric tasks.

Samsung: Samsung Group is het grootste Zuid-Koreaanse conglomeraat en werd opgericht in 1938. Samsung Group had in 2014 489.000 mensen in dienst en is een van 's werelds grootste bedrijven in termen van omzet en marktsterkte. De naam Samsung betekent "Drie Sterren" in het Koreaans en staat voor de drie zonen van de oprichter van het bedrijf. Het bedrijf werd in 1938 opgericht als kruidenierswinkel. Met haar dochteronderneming Samsung Electronics, opgericht in 1969, begon Samsung met de productie van elektrotechnische artikelen, met de focus op consumentenelektronica en huishoudelijke apparaten in een vroeg stadium. Andere branches waarin het grote concern actief is, zijn onder meer machinebouw, auto's (Hyundai), verzekeringen, groothandel, onroerend goed en vrije tijd. Samsung produceert een breed scala aan elektronische producten, waaronder smartphones, televisies, huishoudelijke apparaten en halfgeleiders. De Galaxy-smartphonelijn van het bedrijf is een van de meest populaire ter wereld. Samsung is ook een belangrijke speler in de halfgeleiderindustrie en maakt geheugenchips en processors voor veel andere elektronicafabrikanten.
Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.
Intel HD Graphics 3000: Aankomende (1ste kwartaal 2011) geïntegreerde grafische kaart van de Intel Sandy Bridge processoren (Core ix-2xxx). De 3000 / 200 is de snellere, intern GT2 genaamde, versie met 12 Execution Units (EU's).
De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).
Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor grafische kaart in high-end Ivy Bridge modellen. Biedt verschillende kloksnelheden voor verschillende CPU modellen (ULV tot desktop quad-core) en levert daardoor verschillende prestaties.

2467M: Energiebesparende ULV-processor met kloksnelheid van 1.6-2.3 GHz dankzij Turbo Boost. Biedt een geïntegreerde HD 3000 op een lage 350/1150 MHz en DDR3-1333 geheugencontroller.
3317U: Ivy-Bridge ULV-CPU uit Q2 2012. Heeft een kloksnelheid van 1.7 - 2.6 GHz en een HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). Het TDP staat op 17 watt.
3427U: Snelle Ivy-Bridge ULV-CPU uit Q2 2012. Heeft een kloksnelheid van 1.8 - 2.8 GHz en een HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). Het TDP staat op 17 watt.
3337U: ULV-CPU gebaseerd op de Ivy Bridge architectuur uit het eerste kwartaal van 2013. Heeft een kloksnelheid van 1.8 - 2.7 GHz en een HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1100 MHz). Het verbruik (TDP) staat op 17 watt.
Intel Core i7:
3517U: Snelle Ivy-Bridge ULV-CPU uit Q2 2012. Heeft een kloksnelheid van 1.9 - 3.0 GHz en een HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). Het TDP staat op 17 watt.
3537U: Snelle ULV-CPU gebaseerd op de Ivy Bridge in Q1 2013. Heeft een kloksnelheid van 2.0 - 3.1 GHz en een HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1200 MHz). Het verbruik (TDP) staat op 17 watt.
