Snel is hij niet, maar toch: wie op zoek is naar een kleine lichte, compacte notebook met een goede schermresolutie heeft met dit model een prima alternatief in handen. Hét sterke punt is de resolutie van 1366x768, waardoor websites en toepassingen prima tot hun recht komen. Een notebook die zich leent voor e-mailen, surfen en wat tikwerk. De scherpe prijs maakt dit tot een zeer aantrekkelijke keuze, die wat ons betreft bekroond mag worden met een Hardware.Info Bronze Award.

Packard Bell is weinig tijd kwijt geweest aan het ontwerpen van de dot. De Acer Aspire One 150 is door de fabrikant simpelweg voorzien van een ander design. Logisch, aangezien Packard Bell onderdeel is van Acer. Maar dat ze het prima uiterlijk van de Aspire One zo hebben kunnen verknoeien is een knappe prestatie. De dot ziet er veel minder chique en luxe uit en komt wat goedkoop en plastic over.

The line between netbooks and laptops continues to blur, with screen sizes from 9-inch up to 15-inch in the mix and performance specifications with a similarly wide range. Packard Bell sees its dot s and dot m as mainstream netbooks and the larger of the two, the dot m reviewed here, has an 11.6-inch widescreen LCD and runs on a 1.2GHz, 64-bit Athlon L110 processor with 2GB memory. This is a great little machine, though more a small notebook than an oversized netbook. Vista doesn't hold it back much and the extra memory and strong ATI graphics help with this. However, if you can afford the six-cell battery, go for it, or stay fairly close to a power socket all the time.

Bigger than your regular netbook, the Packard Bell dot m/a offers AMD processors and an 11.6in screen. Breaking away from the pack, the Packard Bell dot m/a has a bigger screen and a potentially faster processor, not to mention a graphics chip that can handle simple games if you drop the quality settings. A generous battery pack is always welcome, although actual runtime is reduced here by the inefficient processors, when compared to an Intel chipset.

In its basic form, the dot m/a is let down badly by its farcically poor battery life but if you can lay hands on one with the six-cell battery for a reasonable price then you will have a very nice machine and one that represents decent value for money. A 10.1in screen Samsung netbook like the NC10 or N110 will set you back between £300 and £350, and neither has the hi-res screen or 2GB of memory of the m/a.

Will Packard Bell's smallest netbook offer big performance? The dot s is Packard Bell's 10.1-inch netbook. Unlike its larger brothers, the dot m and dot m/a, it stays safely in known netbook territory by featuring an Intel Atom processor and running Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. As with the dot m, the sample we reviewed was a pre-production unit so we were not able to provide full benchmarking results, such as battery life testing. While the Packard Bell dot s doesn't really bring anything new to the netbook market, it is a well-rounded machine that should be on most people's list of machines to check out before making a purchase. As long as the touchpad issues are rectified, we are big fans.

Essentially the dot m/a, but from an alternate reality. Packard Bell's second 11.6-inch netbook, the dot m, shares exactly the same chassis as the dot m/a, but differs internally by carrying an Intel Atom processor and running Windows XP software. While the keyboard may not reach the standard we expect, all in all, the Packard Bell dot m proves a great netbook. The screen in particular is fantastic and this machine is certainly worth a look.

Hold the front page -- it's a netbook without an Intel Atom CPU! The Packard Bell dot m/a, also known in some circles as the Gateway LT3100, does away with the Intel norm in favour of an AMD Athlon L110 CPU. It also plumps for a larger-than-usual 11.6-inch screen and a slightly wider chassis, pushing it dangerously near laptop territory. The Packard Bell dot m/a is a good netbook, particularly for anyone seeking a larger screen than normal. It's slightly bigger than many of its rivals and its battery life is merely average, but it has an excellent keyboard and would make for a great second computer.

Although the dot S2 is frighteningly similar to the Acer 532h, there are a few differences. The touchpad is an improvement and the extra bundled software a welcome bonus, while it also manages to out perform the Acer-branded version in terms of battery life. It’s not enough to get a better score, though. I also can’t help feeling that if Acer is to continue producing netbooks under the Packard Bell brand, it would do well to differentiate them from the Aspire One series a little more.

With a Valentino Rossi (moto GP champion) decor, the Packard Bell dot VR46 is an original looking ultra-portable laptop. This "Valentino Rossi edition" is a nice surprise. Apart from its both original and rather undaring design, the Packard Bell dot m/u gives good performance and decent battery life. It lacks a good screen and graphics solution worthy of the name.

Packard Bell: Packard Bell is een dochteronderneming van Acer. De naam wordt gebruikt door twee electronica bedrijven. Het eerste was een Amerikaanse radio fabrikant, opgericht in 1926, dat later een contract van defensie kreeg, en andere consumenten electronica maakte zoals televisie sets. Teledyne nam de zaak over in 1978. In 1986 kochten investeerders de naam over voor een nieuw gevormde PC fabrikant. Oorspronkelijk produceerde ze goedkope computers in de Verenigide Staten, maar introduceerde later hun computers ook op de Europeese markt. NEC nam het over in de late jaren 90. Acer nam het over in 2008. Ondanks hun gelijkaardige namen, is er nooit een verband geweest tussen Packard Bell en Hewlett Packard, of Bell System. Packard Bell is een internationale notebook fabrikant, maar met een beperkt aantal testrapporten en een klein marktaandeel. Tot nu toe (2009) maakte de fabrikant vooral laptops die tegen een stootje moesten kunnen.

Deze grafische kaarten voor notebooks zijn niet bruikbaar voor games. Als ze al games kunnen draaien, dan doen ze dat met grafische afwijkingen en heel lage framesnelheid. Voor gamers zijn deze chips ongeschikt! Kantoor en internet taken zijn, daarentegen, geen probleem voor deze GPUs.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is een geïntegreerde (onboard) grafische chip op de Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. Dit is een snellere kloksnelheid versie van de GMA 900.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Geïntegreerde (gedeeld geheugen) videokaart voor de Intel Atom N4xx processoren. Marginaal sneller dan een oude GMA950 en niet geschikt voor 3D games of HD video’s (enkel MPEG2 versnelling).

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Deze onboard (gedeeld geheugen) GPU is geïntegreerd in de GM45-chipset (Montevina). Door twee extra shaders en een hogere kloksnelheid is hij veel sneller dan de oude GMA X3100. Toch is hij niet aan te raden voor gamers (DirectX 10 games niet speelbaar of alleen met zeer lage grafische instellingen). De geïntegreerde grafische video processor kan de CPU helpen bij het decoderen van HD video’s, om zo het vloeiend afspelen van bijvoorbeeld Blu-Ray films toch mogelijk te maken met een trage CPU.

Intel Atom:

N270: Energiezuinig, goedkoop en trage netbook single core CPU. Door de in-order uitvoering zijn de prestaties per MHz lager dan van een Core Solo of Celeron M processor.

N450: Intel Atom CPU voor netbooks met geïntegreerde geheugencontroller en een GMA 3150 GPU. De prestaties van het systeem zullen slechts iets hoger zijn dan van eerdere Atom N280 / GMA 950 systemen.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

8.90: Deze schermdiagonaal wordt toegepast in kleine tablets.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.
