Eigenlijk zijn we meer te spreken over de meegeleverde muis dan de laptop. En eigenlijk is de laptop helemaal niet zo verkeerd: de specificaties zijn op de grafische kaart na dik in orde. MSI levert ook de GT735-laptop met een ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3850. Die kaart of een gelijkwaardige NVIDIA mobiele grafische kaart zien wij veel liever in een laptop als deze. Om fatsoenlijk games op een laptop te spelen op een resolutie van 1680 x 1050 hebt u echt meer nodig dan een GeForce 9600M GT.
De MSI GX620 heeft wat meer balans in de hardware nodig, iets meer grafische kracht tegenover een goedkopere cpu en desnoods iets minder geheugen. Dan zal de laptop in games sneller zijn en vermoedelijk voor dezelfde prijs leverbaar.

Still, if we had two grand to blow and needed both a gaming machine and something we could take on the road, we'd be inclined to buy a budget laptop and a SFF PC for just a few dollars more.

Buying a gaming notebook is always a balancing act — on the one hand, should one spend more money and get a major kick-butt gaming notebook, or spend just enough to get a machine that you can play some current games on. The problem is that no matter how good your gaming notebook is now, it’s not going to be able to play games that will be coming out a year-and-a-half from now. Such is the case for the MSI GX620 — in reality, it’s actually a good example of a very capable gaming notebook and one that can play most last-generation games well, but not all current generation games.

Finally, the speaker quality is what you would expect from a notebook - pretty poor. However using the 7.1 channel SPDIF audio output and a good speaker system, the speaker quality is fairly trival. Besides, what self respecting gamer doesn’t use headphones anyway?

If we consider gaming performances, the winner is decided by nuances and better optimization for one or other graphics card. That means, that in some games better frame rate will have GX720 and in some GT735. Processor overclock sounds like great possibility but it results with little improvements in games because bottle neck is actually graphics cards. What model you will choose depends on your budget, but one thing is for sure: you will get very quality notebook with enviably performances as in games as in all other segments.

Since MSI's netbook is called the Wind, I thought that the company might launch a gaming laptop called the Hurricane. Though it's not actually called that, the MSI GX720 ($1,800 street) looks as if it were ready to take the gaming market by storm. There are far better gaming laptops in the market, but the GX720 is priced well below them and has a copious blend of media center features.

Gamers are right to be skeptical about an $800 gaming notebook. Though the MSI GX630 may appeal to budget-conscious casual gamers who occasionally fire up a round of Civilization, its keyboard and endurance leave a bit to be desired. Even casual gamers are likely try to play Call of Duty, Prince of Persia, or Mirror’s Edge, and on this system, they’ll be disappointed. Those looking for an inexpensive gaming system will be better served with the (admittedly more expensive) $1,399 Gateway P-7811FX.

On the one hand, its potency in various usage scenarios has us going back for more - perhaps due to the fact that it scores higher in the performance stakes than my own desktop PC. On the other hand, we're anything but dazzled by the system's supposedly gamer-orientated aesthetics. Herein - literally - lies the problem. What's inside the MSI GT725 has us very impressed, the hardware combination is exactly what we'd look for in a high-end notebook. Intel's 2.53GHz processor makes light work of day-to-day tasks, 4GB of RAM is more than ample for most users, and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 is on the cutting edge of notebook graphics. Still, MSI's target market is the gamer that seeks acceptable frame rates on the go. Here's a notebook that scores 9,943 on 3DMark '06, and they generally don't come much quicker than that.

Intel's 2.53GHz processor makes light work of day-to-day tasks, 4GB of RAM is more than ample for most users, and the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850 is on the cutting edge of notebook graphics. Still, MSI's target market is the gamer that seeks acceptable frame rates on the go. Here's a notebook that scores 9,943 on 3DMark '06, and they generally don't come much quicker than that.

Commentaar

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) werd in 1986 opgericht in Taiwan. MSI is vooral bekend als fabrikant van moederborden en grafische kaarten voor pc's, maar biedt ook computeraccessoires, complete systemen, moederborden, grafische kaarten, laptops, desktop-pc's, monitoren en andere componenten. De merknaam Microstar behoort in Duitsland echter toe aan het bedrijf Medion. MSI staat bekend om zijn gamingproducten en heeft een breed scala aan gaminglaptops en desktop-pc's ontwikkeld. Het bedrijf is ook actief in werkstations, servers en industriële automatisering. MSI heeft kantoren in Noord-Amerika, Europa, Azië en Australië.

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Opvolger van de 8600M GT en door het kleinere formaat van 65nm heeft de chip een hogere kloksnelheid (en is daardoor sneller) maar wel hetzelfde energieverbruik. Voor de rest beschikt hij over een verbeterde video processor (VP3) en HybridPower om de accu te sparen (in combinatie met de 9100M G).

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3850: Lager geklokte versie van de desktop HD 3850 op 55nm gefabriceerd en met DirectX 10.1 ondersteuning. De prestaties zitten tussen die van ed 8800 GTS en GTX en zou daarom vrij goed moeten presteren in games zoals Call of Duty 4. De Avivo HD video engine helpt de processor bij het decoderen van HD video’s (MPEG-2, VC-1, H.264).

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850: Gebaseerd op de desktop HD 4850 maar met tragere klokksnelheden. Het stroomverbruik varieert tussen de 45 tot 65 Watt voor de 4800 reeks.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

P7350: Instap niveau Core 2 Duo processor met 3 MB Level 2 Cache en door zijn TDP van 25 Watt ook geschikt voor 13" laptops.

P8400: Processor uit de middenklasse met een TDP van 25 Watt. Voor high end gamers zijn de prestaties niet hoog genoeg (voor eersteklasse videokaarten).

P9500: De P9500 is een snelle processor uit het middensegment voor laptops en is eigenlijk een Core 2 DUo T9400 met een TDP van 25 Watt.

AMD Turion X2 Ultra:

ZM-82: Mengeling van twee K8 cores en K10 uncores (geheugen controller). Heeft betere energiebesparende functies ten opzichte van oudere Turion CPU's, maar nog niet zo goed en snel als Core 2 Duo CPU's.

ZM-80: Mengeling van twee K8 cores en K10 uncores (geheugen controller). Heeft betere energiebesparende functies ten opzichte van oudere Turion CPU's, maar nog niet zo goed en snel als Core 2 Duo CPU's. De ZM-80 is de traagste CPU uit de ZM reeks en is een instap niveau processor (in 2008).
