Compared to the laptops you'll find it next to in a PC shop, it may be that the fun looks are all that can make the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 stand out. It's not any worse than its low-priced Ultrabook peers, and the keyboard is good for those who want to do a lot of typing on a small machine. For a 13-inch Ultrabook priced at £599/US$729 (around AU$912), it's perfectly acceptable. You'll get something a fair bit snappier if you can stretch to something like the Asus Zenbook UX32A, though.

With that in mind, you’re probably going to forget about the average screen, the heavier body and the sub-par battery life of the Lenovo U310. Of course, if you want these solved, you can get better ultrabooks than this one, for closer to one grand. With the IdeaPad U310, Lenovo shows that budget ultrabooks are not a myth and good 13.3 inch ultra-portable laptops cab be bought for about $700. Of course, the U310 still has its issues, but the overall package is good enough to make it my favorite cheap ultrabook right now.

That said, it would seem that the Lenovo IdeaPad U310 is a solid bet for the money: it's attractive (save for that glossy bezel), it offers a decent selection of ports and while the keyboard and trackpad aren't perfect, they still present an excellent alternative to what you'll find on many pricier machines.

The U310 isn’t without some drawbacks, though, the biggest of which is some apparent binging that now has the laptop topping the scales at a beastly 3.6 pounds, versus 2.9 pounds for the U300s. (The switch from SSD to HDD is responsible for only a tiny fraction of that.) Once a competitor on the weight front, the U310 is suddenly one of the heaviest 13.3-inch ultrabooks on the market. And while the metal shell makes it impressively sturdy on the whole, I was far from thrilled with the plastic bezel surrounding the LCD. A fingernail will easily pry this flimsy piece up, and I’m concerned that these bezels coming off will eventually be a big problem for U310 owners.

Commentaar

Intel HD Graphics 4000: Processor grafische kaart in high-end Ivy Bridge modellen. Biedt verschillende kloksnelheden voor verschillende CPU modellen (ULV tot desktop quad-core) en levert daardoor verschillende prestaties.

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

3317U: Ivy-Bridge ULV-CPU uit Q2 2012. Heeft een kloksnelheid van 1.7 - 2.6 GHz en een HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). Het TDP staat op 17 watt.

13.30": Dit schermformaat wordt vooral gebruikt voor subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles. Voor alle drie types is dit formaat redelijk groot. De grootste verscheidenheid aan subnotebooks wordt vertegenwoordigd in deze klasse.

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.

1.7 kg: Dit gewicht is typisch voor erg grote tablets, subnotebooks, ultrabooks en convertibles met een 11-13 inch schermdiagonaal.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" uit de Engelse legende, novo (Latijn voor nieuw) werd in 1984 opgericht als Chinees handelsbedrijf in computers. In 2004 was het bedrijf de grootste laptopfabrikant in China en, na de overname van IBM's pc-divisie in 2005, de op drie na grootste ter wereld. Naast desktops en notebooks produceert het bedrijf monitoren, projectors, servers, enz. en is het gespecialiseerd in de ontwikkeling, productie en marketing van consumentenelektronica, pc's, software, bedrijfsoplossingen en aanverwante diensten.

In 2016 stond het bedrijf op de eerste plaats in de wereld wat betreft computerverkopen. Dit was in 2023 nog steeds het geval, met een wereldwijd marktaandeel van ongeveer 23%. Belangrijke productlijnen zijn Thinkpad, Legion en Ideapad.

In 2011 verwierf het een meerderheidsbelang in Medion AG, een Europese fabrikant van computerhardware. In 2014 werd Motorola Mobility gekocht, wat Lenovo een boost gaf op de smartphonemarkt.
