De Galaxy S7 Edge is niet het summum van innovatie, maar weet wel state-of-the-art technologieën te passen in zijn behuizing en op dit moment is de smartphone zeker de standaard binnen zijn klasse waaraan de rest zich moet meten. Er zijn echter ook enkele punten van kritiek en we hadden graag gezien dat Samsung op enkele punten wat gewaagdere beslissingen had genomen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 240.4 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) .

De frequentie van 240.4 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 53 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 17924 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz waargenomen.

Samsung zet de nieuwe standaard met een smartphone die in technisch en visueel opzicht uitstekend is. De Koreaanse fabrikant had meer kunnen bieden op het gebied van verbindingen, zoals modernere LTE en vooral ook qua aansluitingen. Met name het ontbreken van USB Type-C is hier een punt van kritiek.

Maar voor de rest doet Samsung bijna alles goed. Het beeldscherm is het beste dat beeldscherm in een smartphone die we tot nu toe getest hebben en de camera maakt zelfs onder ongunstige lichtomstandigheden uitstekende foto's. Maar het is met name de uitzonderlijk goede batterijlevensduur die toegevoegde waarde biedt ten opzichte van de Galaxy S7. Het dual-edge beeldscherm ziet er goed uit, maar dit is een kwestie van smaak. Voor een aantal van de features is een gebogen scherm zelfs een vereiste.

Samsung's Galaxy S7 Edge combineert hoge prestaties, een briljant beeldscherm, een superieure camera en grote batterijlevensduur in een enkel apparaat.

Samsung behoudt dan ook met recht zijn toppositie op de smartphonemarkt met zijn nieuwe Galaxy S7-lijn. De modellen in deze lijn zijn wel meer een standaard onderhoud aan de productcatalogus dan stralende voorbeelden van innovatie.
