Huawei's Mate S is een smartphone die vooral weet te overtuigen door zijn buitengewone bouwkwaliteit en stijlvolle design. Het toestel heeft een uitstekende batterijduur, een degelijke camera, eersteklas spraakkwaliteit en een up-to-date besturingssysteem, namelijk het erg vlot lopende Google Android 5.1 Lollipop.

We begrijpen echter niet waarom Huawei 150 euro (~$168) meer vraagt voor de Mate S dan voor zijn P8. Hoewel het toestel een meer hoogwaardige indruk maakt, een dubbele interne opslagcapaciteit en een snellere SoC heeft, kan de premium P8 meer dan compenseren voor deze voordelen en dit voor 50 euro (~$56) minder.

Huawei heeft met zijn Mate 6 een uitstekende smartphone te bieden; het grootste nadeel is echter de buitengewoon hoge prijs.

Het is ook jammer dat Force Touch voor de Mate S nog niet beschikbaar is vanaf de lancering. Er wordt echter verwacht dat daar nog dit jaar verandering in komt in Europa. Huawei kon niet bevestigen of Force Touch de prijs zou beïnvloeden. Deze feature maakt het toestel een halve millimeter dikker door de extra laag op het touchscreen.

Het grootste minpunt is de ietwat beperkte connectiviteit. Noch LTE Cat. 6, noch een IR-poort zijn aanwezig en de interfaces voor het afspelen van media zijn ook relatief beperkt. Anderzijds is de Mate S uitgerust met een erg goede vingerafdruklezer, die een aantal extra features biedt. Al bij al is het toestel een uitstekende smartphone.
