Kort testrapport Asus Transformer 3 Pro T303UA-GN050T Convertible

Serieuze Surface Concurrent? Convertibles met veel rekenkracht zijn altijd populair. Asus heeft een Skylake i7 CPU in een dunne behuizing gestopt en hoopt voor de beste uitkomst, maar we zijn een aantal problemen tegengekomen. In ons testrapport zullen we de plaats van de Transformer 3 Pro in het convertible segment bediscussiëren.

Responstijd Scherm

De responstijden van het scherm tonen hoe snel het scherm in staat is om van één kleur naar de andere te veranderen. Trage responstijden kunnen aanleiding geven tot 'nabeelden' rond bewegende objecten of het scherm wazig maken (blur). Vooral spelers van snelle 3D-games hebben baat bij een scherm met snelle responstijden.

Het scherm vertoonde relatief trage responstijden in onze tests en is misschien te traag voor games.
Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.8 (minimum) tot 240 (maximum) ms. » 67 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd vergelijkbaar is met het gemiddelde (27.3 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Ter vergelijking: alle testtoestellen variëren van 0.9 (minimum) tot 250 (maximum) ms. » 12 % van alle toestellen zijn beter.
Dit betekent dat de gemeten responstijd beter is dan het gemiddelde (42.9 ms) van alle geteste toestellen.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

Om de schermhelderheid te verlagen schakelen sommige laptops het backlight erg snel aan en uit. Dit gebeurt aan een dergelijk hoge frequentie dat het niet zichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog. Als de frequentie te laag is kunnen personen met gevoelige ogen geïrriteerd geraken, hoofdpijn krijgen en zelfs flickering waarnemen.
Screen flickering / PWM waargenomen 200 Hz90 % helderheid instelling

Het backlight van het scherm flikkert aan 200 Hz (hoogstwaarschijnlijk met PWM - Pulse-Width Modulation) aan een helderheid van 90 % en lager. Boven deze helderheid zou er geen flickering / PWM mogen optreden.

De frequentie van 200 Hz is redelijk laag en de meeste mensen die gevoelig zijn aan flickering kunnen dit dus waarnemen of geïrriteerde ogen krijgen (gebruikmakend van de vermelde helderheid en lager).

Ter vergelijking: 59 % van alle geteste toestellen maakten geen gebruik van PWM om de schermhelderheid te verlagen. Als het wel werd gebruikt, werd een gemiddelde van 456 (minimum: 43 - maximum: 10420) Hz waargenomen.

De grootste concurrent van Asus is de Microsoft Surface. De Transformer 3 Pro is een stap voorwaarts: een snellere CPU, veel RAM en een ruime SSD in een convertible. Het toetsenbord dock transformeert dit pakket tot een volwaardige laptop. Ten tijde van de tests was het apparaat geprijsd op €1599. Daarvoor krijgt de koper een convertible die meer dan geschikt is voor alledaagse taken. Helaas kon de processor nooit volledig benut worden; dit is de belangrijkste reden waarom we dit apparaat niet als serieuze concurrent van de Microsoft Surface Pro 4 beschouwen.

Het gat tussen de potentie en daadwerkelijk behaalde prestaties kan veel potentiële kopers afschrikken. De Asus Transformer 3 Pro is echter een stijlvolle convertible van hoge kwaliteit. Het uitmuntende beeldscherm dekt een breed kleurenspectrum en is geschikt voor professioneel gebruik.

Een snellere processor komt altijd van pas. Maar wat is het punt waarop de fabrikant de CPU ernstig moet gaan beperken? Een Intel Core i5 7Y54 kan passief gekoeld worden, terwijl deze chip evenveel rekenkracht heeft als de Intel Core i7-6500U van ons testmodel. Het aanbod van poorten is typisch, maar we hadden graag twee USB 3.1 poorten (met Thunderbolt 3 ondersteuning) gezien om functionaliteit te vergroten.
