Oud maar springlevend. Het is de laatste tijd erg stil geworden rond de kleine iPad. Sommigen beweerden zelfs dat de Mini geannuleerd zou worden. Phil Schiller van Apple vermeldde de iPad Mini 4 slechts in twee zinnen tijdens de keynote. Dit indachtig presteert de nieuwe iPad Mini in ons testrapport beter dan we hadden verwacht, maar er is nog altijd een aanzienlijk verschil met de iPad Air 2.

De meest interessante feature van de Apple iPad Mini 4 is het nieuwe besturingssysteem iOS 9. De negende versie van het Apple-besturingssysteem introduceert niet alleen diverse nieuwe handige features, het lijkt ook een positieve invloed te hebben op de algemene prestaties, wat bevestigd wordt door een aantal benchmarks die opnieuw uitvoerden op de Apple iPad Air 2. We denken dan ook dat iOS 9, ondanks de korte tijd die is verlopen sinds de lancering, een aanbevelenswaardige update is.

Is dit ook het geval voor de iPad Mini 4? Er zijn een aantal aspecten die spreken voor een upgrade ten opzichte van de voorganger: eerst en vooral is de behuizing opnieuw lichter en dunner zonder aan stabiliteit in te boeten en blijft deze de benchmark op het vlak van materialen en bouwkwaliteit. Apple heeft het scherm ook wat verbeterd. Het paneel is nu volledig gelamineerd, wat resulteert in minder reflecties. Het is ook mogelijk dat de gunstigere meetresultaten hier een direct resultaat van zijn. Er is echter nog ruimte voor verbetering wat de zwartwaarde en het contrast betreft, maar we hebben niettemin te maken met een erg overtuigend scherm. De weergave van kleuren behoort tot de beste die momenteel op de markt te vinden is. Dit geldt overigens ook voor de GPS-sensor, die zelfs ons referentie-navigatietoestel versloeg. Andere verbeteringen ten opzichte van de iPad Mini 3 zijn de geüpdatete draadloze modules en de camera's, hoewel deze laatste op zijn best degelijke resultaten opleveren en zeker geen upgrade noodzakelijk maken. De zaken staan er anders voor als we ook kijken naar de prestaties van de huidige generatie, die nu veel hoger zijn. De nieuwe Mini kan zich niet meten met de iPad Air 2 maar verslaat zijn voorganger met gemak in elke test. Dit is ook het geval voor de langere batterijduur, ondanks de hogere performance en kleinere batterijcapaciteit.

De Apple iPad Mini 4 is opnieuw de beste tablet met een schermgrootte van ongeveer 8-inch. Het nieuwe iOS 9 zorgt voor erg hoge prestaties en bovendien prima batterijduur. Als de hoge prijs geen probleem is, kunnen we het toestel zeker aanbevelen. Eigenaars van een iPad Air kunnen echter gerust zijn; hun toestel is nog altijd krachtig genoeg voor zowat elke taak.
