Huawei heeft de afgelopen jaren flink aan de weg getimmerd om een marktaandeel op te bouwen in de smartphonemarkt. Dat heeft zeker succes gehad, want op dit moment is het de derde speler in de markt en maakt het kans om binnen twee jaar de tweede plaats van Apple over te nemen. We hebben Huawei zien uitgroeien van een kleine tot aan de grote speler die het nu is en we moeten erkennen dat de smartphones ook elk jaar beter worden. Zowel qua hardware als software maakt het Chinese bedrijf elk jaar stappen.

Als je een phablet wil, dan mag je je zoektocht staken. De Huawei Mate 9 is een uitstekende telefoon met veel kwaliteiten, zoals een mooie uitstraling, een zeer degelijke autonomie, een goede camera die veel trucjes kan vertonen en vooral veel schermoppervlakte. Voldoende om er ook lange tijd een boek op te lezen, bijvoorbeeld, of machtig op te gamen. Echt iets voor mensen die lang onderweg zijn. Op softwarevlak is de nieuwe Mate beter dan ooit: clean, snel en propvol slimme ideeën. Het enige dat we spijtig vinden is de prijs. Waar Huawei vroeger toch altijd een tikje goedkoper was zonder in te binden op kwaliteit, zetten ze nu een vlaggenschip aan een vlaggenschipprijs neer. Je betaalt dus niet teveel voor wat je krijgt, maar door de prijsverhoging zal het toch voor meer mensen een toestel worden om te vergelijken met andere toppers in plaats van een toestel dat eigenlijk een no-brainer zou moeten zijn.

Either way the chips have fallen nicely for Huawei. The sudden and all too public demise of the Galaxy Note 7 has left the Mate 9 with a huge potential market. Granted there's no stylus, but the Mate 9 is cheaper, has a larger screen and it runs Android 7 out of the box. Even if the Note 7 hadn't self-immolated so spectacularly, the Mate 9 would probably have been a winner, but as things stand Huawei may well have problems keeping up with demand.

The Huawei Mate 9 is a pretty good phone from any way you look at it. It’s got a beautiful design and is the fastest Android phone I’ve ever tested. The screen technology and the auto mode for camera could be improved upon but these are features that can't be overlooked considering the phone costs 699 Euros which translates to AED 2800. However, Huawei has priced it's phones a bit lesser in the Middle East so I won't be surprised to see an official pricing of AED 2499.

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

Grote schermformaten laten hogere resoluties toe. Details zoals letters zijn groter. Anderzijds is het energieverbruik lager bij kleine schermdiagonalen en de toestellen zijn kleiner, lichter en goedkoper.
