EN→NL Archive.org versionFor $1799, the Dell XPS 17 (1710X) is a grand deal. You get lots of RAM, plenty of hard drive space, and most importantly, heaps of CPU and graphics grunt. We like the fact that modern ports such as DisplayPort and USB 3.0 are standard and that it has a built-in digital TV tuner and Blu-ray drive, but we lament the lack of a remote control and an ExpressCard slot. Furthermore, we think that the touchscreen isn't really that useful.

With the included 6-cell battery, expect to get about 4 hours of battery life and with an optional 9-cell battery, Dell says you can get 7.5 hours of life. We did notice that when running on battery power, the laptop does get very hot and the fans turn up to a very loud speed, so make sure to keep it well-ventilated at all times to prevent overheating.

It also just happens to be one of the most feature rich notebooks in the market, currently. If you were out shopping for a desktop replacement notebook, then the Dell XPS 17 should be high on your list. Remember though, that this is not exactly a portable solution and the battery life is not the best, since it does not have Nvidia’s Optimus technology so you’ll have to compromise on these a bit.

Dell: Dell is een Amerikaanse fabrikant (gevestigd in Texas) van computerhardware, opgericht in 1984 en is een van de grootste internationale fabrikanten, zowel qua marktaandeel als qua notebookmodellen. De productlijn omvat desktops, notebooks, opslagsystemen, monitors, servers, printers, consumentenelektronica en randapparatuur. Dell biedt laptops die geschikt zijn voor verschillende toepassingen, zoals zakelijke laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables en werkstations. De zakelijke laptops uit de Latitude en Precision series van Dell zijn een optie voor professionele gebruikers en bedrijven.
In 2023 had Dell een marktaandeel van ongeveer 17% in de wereldwijde verkoop van pc's en stond daarmee op de derde plaats, na Lenovo en HP.
Voor gameliefhebbers is er Dell's Alienware merk voor gaming notebooks.
Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M: Op de GF106 gebaseerde architectuur met slechts 144 Shaders en een verschillende geheugen bus van 128 of 192 Bit afhankelijk van het gebruikte videogeheugen.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M: Opvolger van de GeForce GT 445M en gebaseerd op dezelfde GF106-chip met iets hogere kloksnelheden en ondersteuning voor DDR3 op 900 MHz.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M: Middenklasse grafische kaart voor laptops gebaseerd op de oudere 400M serie, maar met ondersteuning voor 900 MHz DDR3 geheugen.
De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

Intel Core i7:
740QM: De Core i7 740QM is een high-end quad-core CPU voor laptops (uit 2010) met een relatief lage standaard kloksnelheid maar met hoge maximum frequentie (2,93 GHz) na het inschakelen van Turbo Boost (voor één core). Hij combineert daarmee de voordelen van een trage quad core en een snelle single core processor. Vergeleken met de snellere Core i7 mobiele CPU's heeft de 740QM maar 6MB L3 Cache.
840QM: De Core i7-840QM is een high-end quad core CPU voor laptops die in Turbo Modus van 1,86 naar 3,2 GHz overklokt. Daarmee combineert de processor de voordelen van een snelle single core CPU en van een trage quad-core CPU. Hyperthreading maakt het mogelijk om 8 threads gelijktijdig te verwerken.
2630QM: Snelle quad-core processor gebaseerd op de Sandy Bridge architectuur met een geïntegreerde grafische kaart een dual-channel DDR3 geheugencontroller.
2670QM: Snelle quad-core processor op 2.2-3.1 GHz geklokt en gebaseerd op de Sandy Bridge architectuur met geïntegreerde grafische chip en dual-channel DDR3 geheugencontroller.
Intel Core i5:
460M: De Intel Core i5-460M is een high-end dual core CPU voor laptops en heeft een kloksnelheid van 2,53 GHz tot 2,8 GHz (door Turbo Mode). Elke Core is gebaseerd op de Nehalem (Westmere) micro architectuur. Hyperthreading zorgt er voor dat deze Dual Core CPU toch vier threads gelijktijdig kan verwerken. Vergeleken met de Core i5-540M, ondersteund de 460M geen AES, VT-d en Trusted Execution functies en is hij na de inschakeling van Turbo Boost minder snel (2,8 versus 3,06 GHz).
2410M: Dual-core processor gebaseerd op de Sandy Bridge architectuur met een geïntegreerde videokaart en dual-channel DDR3 geheugen controller. De CPU is geklokt op 2,3 GHz (Turbo Boost 2,6-2,9 GHz) en de GPU op 650 (1200MHz Turbo).

Normaal hebben laptops met een 17 inch schermdiagonaal dit gewicht. Dit is redelijk zwaar voor een 15 inch laptops maar aanvaardbaar voor toestellen bedoeld voor stationair gebruik.
4 kg:
Dit gewicht is typisch voor desktopvervangers met 17 inch schermen en beperkte mobiliteit.
78.12%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
