It’s big, heavy and expensive, but the Dell Precision M4700 provides workstation levels of performance, along with a rugged design that can cope with a wide range of outdoor environments. This is not for people who simply need a desktop replacement system for office use – it’s a robust workstation for design professionals that will certainly earn its keep.

The problem with comparing the Dell Precision M4700 to previous units is that there are far fewer mobile workstation laptops than consumer or business laptops out there. Our last true mobile workstation Editors' Choice was the HP Elitebook 8560w$941.16 at Amazon Marketplace, and while it also has ISV certifications and also has a 15.6-inch full HD screen, the HP 8560w used an older Core i7 processor and AMD FirePro graphics. Granted, the 8650w also came in at under $1,600. The Dell Precision M4700 is a higher-level workstation, with many more options, expandability, higher end drive systems, higher end graphics options, and is generally more capable. If you have a need for ISV certified apps, or highest end reliability and performance, then the Dell Precision M4700 is the mobile workstation for you, and as such, earns our nod for Editors' Choice for mobile workstations.

The Precision 7720's brilliant display is delightful, its lengthy battery life is better than most workstations' and its performance is more than adequate for 3D graphics work. The only major downside we found is that its SSD was far slower than others we tested.

Dell: Dell is een Amerikaanse fabrikant (gevestigd in Texas) van computerhardware, opgericht in 1984 en is een van de grootste internationale fabrikanten, zowel qua marktaandeel als qua notebookmodellen. De productlijn omvat desktops, notebooks, opslagsystemen, monitors, servers, printers, consumentenelektronica en randapparatuur. Dell biedt laptops die geschikt zijn voor verschillende toepassingen, zoals zakelijke laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables en werkstations. De zakelijke laptops uit de Latitude en Precision series van Dell zijn een optie voor professionele gebruikers en bedrijven.

In 2023 had Dell een marktaandeel van ongeveer 17% in de wereldwijde verkoop van pc's en stond daarmee op de derde plaats, na Lenovo en HP.

Voor gameliefhebbers is er Dell's Alienware merk voor gaming notebooks.

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500M: NVIDIA Quadro FX 1500M is de versie van 7900 GS video kaart voor notebooks die geoptimaliseerd werd voor CAD en professionele 3D-toepassingen. Technisch gezien, heeft deze dezelfde of vergelijkbare chip (G71 architectuur), maar met andere Bios en support voor professionele drivers.

De spelprestatie is duidelijk slechter dan die van de 7900 GS (vanwege de toepassingsoptimalisering). Desondanks kunnen de meest modded drivers gebruikt worden, dus is de Quadro FX 1500M meer een 7900 GS (voor het besturingssysteem).

Deze grafische kaarten zouden alle huidige spellen moeten kunnen draaien, maar de meeste spellen zullen alleen met gemiddelde of lage detail instellingen en lage resoluties goed werken. Oudere of minder veeleisende spellen kunnen nog wel met goede grafische instellingen gespeeld worden.

NVIDIA Quadro K2000M: De snelste 15-inch workstation grafische kaart gebaseerd op de Kepler architectuur met een vergelijkbare core als die van de GeForce GT 650M.

Deze middenklasse grafische kaarten kunnen alle huidige spellen vloeiend spelen. Veeleisende spellen kunnen alleen met gemiddelde detail instellingen gespeeld worden.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

3720QM: Een Ivy Bridge quad-core processor met een kloksnelheid van 2.6 GHz met Turbo Boost ondersteuning tot 3.6 GHz. Heeft een geïntegreerde 4000 GPU die draait op 650-1250 MHz en een dual-channel DDR3 geheugencontroller.

Gewoonlijk hebben subnotebooks, ultrabooks en redelijk lichte laptops met een 12-16 inch schermdiagonaal dit gewicht.

77.36%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
