The ASUS UL50Vf is an unremarkable 15-inch notebook with some remarkable technology inside. Nine hours of battery life and the best switchable graphics solution currently on the market make this notebook a very compelling laptop. Unfortunately, the flexible plastic construction, low-resolution display, and a price tag above $800 make this a less than exciting purchase.

Intel's consumer ultra-low voltage (CULV) processors were initially used primarily in 13-inch systems like the Asus UL30A-A1 and Toshiba Satellite T135-S1305WH, but they are finding their way into larger laptops now. CULV processors require less cooling, so manufacturers are able to pare down the cooling methods that make other, more powerful laptops bulky and heavy. The Asus UL50VF-A1 is a gorgeous 15-inch laptop runs on a slower-than-average processor, but it can harness the strengths of two graphics cards and a new Nvidia technology.

Thanks to Nvidia’s smart Optimus technology, the $849 UL50VF-A1 offers both long battery life and graphics muscle. Best of all, this notebook is smart enough switch between integrated and discrete graphics mode based on what you’re doing. We wish ASUS wrapped this technology in a less glossy chassis, but overall the UL50VF-A1 is a strong 15.6-inch notebook.

NVIDIA GeForce G210M: De nVidia GeForce G 210M is een DirectX 10.1 videokaart voor laptops gebaseerd op de GT218 core. Net als zijn voorganger heeft hij 16 shaders maar zijn de kloksnelheden drastisch verhoogt. Door het 40nm productie proces zou het stroomverbruik gelijk blijven.
De core van de G 210M wordt intern GT218 genoemd en is volgens nVidia gebaseerd op de huidige high-end desktop architectuur (GTX 200 series).
 

Alleen oudere games kunnen vloeiend draaien met deze grafische chips (als ze niet veeleisend zijn). Gedeeld geheugen grafische cores in deze categorie hebben het voordeel van minder warmte-ontwikkeling en langere batterijlooptijd. Voor kantoor, internet, beeldcorrectie- en videomonteringswerk zijn deze grafische chips nog steeds bruikbaar zonder enige beperkingen.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Dit is de Core Duo, de opvolger van de Core Solo met een langere pipeline en 5-20% meer snelheid zonder een hoger stroomverbruik. Als een aanvulling op het Core Duo ontwerp zit er een vierde decoder op, een versterkte SSE-unit en een extra reken-, logische unit (ALU).
De Core 2 Duo voor laptops is identiek aan de desktop Core 2 Duo processors maar de notebook-processors werken met een lagere spanning en een lagere Frontside bus klok. De prestatie van gelijk-geklokte notebooks is 20-25% lager dan Desktop PCs vanwege de lagere Frontside bus klok en de langzamere harde schijf.

De klanttevredenheid over ASUS-notebooks heeft betrekking op de prestaties, de functies en de goede prijs-prestatieverhouding van ASUS-notebooks. Zoals bij elk merk zijn er echter af en toe meldingen van problemen zoals oververhitting, drivercompatibiliteit of problemen met de bouwkwaliteit.

79.83%: Dit cijfer is niet echt overtuigend. Het moet in acht worden genomen dat er bijna geen laptops zijn die een score onder de 60% hebben. Dit notebook is beneden gemiddeld beoordeeld, en is niet aanbevolen te kopen.
