Asus is obviously looking to go somewhere new with the NX90. A multimedia PC par excellence, the Asus NX90 offers unheard of audio quality, a high performance configuration and good overall ease-of-use. Unfortunately its screen is particularly disappointing and some of the design choices suffer due to priority given to how the machine looks.

When I first saw the machine, it looked like an over-sized portable DVD player kept up-side-down. I didn't really like it, mainly because of the size-difference in the screen and chassis, and of course the all-glossy body. But, if you look at it this way, are you really going to use it as a “laptop”? This machine is more of an-all-one PC in the form factor of a laptop. And besides, when I used it, ran the benchmarks, played HD movies, it actually feels like a cinema on your desk (or lap). Also, as I type this review, it feels like typing on a regular desktop keyboard. So I'd say that, it gets a five on five in terms of functionality and performance. In terms of looks, you'll need to see for yourself to be double sure. We've received mixed opinions.

The Asus NX90JQ-A1 ($2,530 street) is a media center laptop. While you might be gawking at the full 1080p, 18.4-inch widescreen if it were another laptop, in this one, your eyes are fixed on the mammoth, side-mounted speakers. Merely looking at the laptop is entertaining, as flashes of the classic Maxell commercials with the iconic Blown-Away Guy come to mind. Indeed, the speakers, co-developed by Bang and Olufsen ICEpower, are the main attraction. But there are plenty of other features worth noting, including the dual touchpads, top-of-the-line Nvidia graphics, and a quad-core processor. Serious audiophiles have been waiting for a laptop like this, but like all specialty products, the NX90JQ-A1 will cost you dearly.

Not all laptops are designed to be carted around town. Some are supposed to sit in your room looking pretty, playing movies and music. The 18.4-inch Asus NX90Jq laptop offers decent specs and a good screen for media playback. At such a high price, though, your money will almost certainly be better spent elsewhere.

Honestly, the ASUS NX90 is a great desktop-replacement notebook. It’s extremely stylish, has a gorgeous screen and great speakers. When opened up, it feels more like a desktop than a laptop. The only thing holding it back from greatness is the keyboard. In my opinion, ASUS should ditch the dual track pads, just put a massive one in the center on the palm rest, and have a full sized keyboard on the top, with more spacing between keys. Slightly raised buttons with backlighting and the higher than normal price-tag will be justified on an otherwise great package. And let’s not even get started on the nonsense 32-bit OS which won’t use more than 4GB of ram. At AED 9k (USD 2,450) I expect everything to be in excellent form. The price may have been justified for the newer Sandy Bridge model (NX90SN) that come with the Core i7-2630QM CPU and Nvidia GT 540M GPU, but with these specs, the price seems a bit too high.

You hardly need it with the brightness of the screen, but we're surprised not to see a backlit keyboard on a system at this price. We'd rather it came with a Core i5 to improve battery life, but we're not sure how often you'd take it away from the power socket anyway. But to make the high price worthwhile for anything more than sheer style and desirability, you want to be using this to replace a TV, Blu-ray and possibly a stereo system as well. If you don't want to spend as much, the Dell XPS 15 gives you better value, but the NX90 outshines it in most ways - as you'd expect from a luxury system.

The Asus NX90Jq is a well-specified machine which packs a punch in terms of audio performance. Its striking design suggests it would be ideal as the centrepiece of a home entertainment centre, albeit a relatively expensive choice. Given the battery life, weight and balance issues, together with those dual trackpads, and I can't say I would be tempted lug it around it as my day-to-day laptop, but you'd certainly create an impression if you did.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is een grote Taiwanese fabrikant van computerhardware gevestigd in Taipei, opgericht in 1989. Onder de merknaam Asus produceert het bedrijf een breed scala aan producten, waaronder laptops, desktops, moederborden, grafische kaarten, monitoren, smartphones en netwerkapparatuur, complete systemen en pc-onderdelen voor eindgebruikers.

Onder de merknaam ROG (Republic of Gamers) produceert ASUS gaming laptops die bij gamers bekend staan om hun krachtige specificaties, speciale grafische kaarten, schermen met hoge verversingssnelheid en geavanceerde koelsystemen.

Naast gaming wordt een breed scala aan notebooks aangeboden voor verschillende behoeften en budgetten, van ultraslanke en lichtgewicht ultrabooks tot veelzijdige 2-in-1 convertibles en budgetvriendelijke opties. In 2023 had Asus wereldwijd een marktaandeel van 7% op de pc-markt.

De klanttevredenheid over ASUS-notebooks heeft betrekking op de prestaties, de functies en de goede prijs-prestatieverhouding van ASUS-notebooks. Zoals bij elk merk zijn er echter af en toe meldingen van problemen zoals oververhitting, drivercompatibiliteit of problemen met de bouwkwaliteit.

De meeste niet-veeleisende huidige games kunnen vloeiend draaien. Wees voorbereid op verminderde grafische weergave door lage detailinstellingen en lage resoluties. Toch verschaffen deze kaarten voldoende prestatie voor kantoor taken en video bekijken (niet voor HD videos).

NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M: De GeForce GT 335M heeft 72 shader cores (vergeleken met de 48 van de GT 330M) en is gebaseerd op de GT215 core (GTS 350M).

Intel Core i7:

720QM: De Core i7-720QM is de traagste Core i7 Quad Core uit 2009 en heeft kloksnelheden tussen de 1,6 en 2,8 GHz (door de Turbo mode). Daarmee combineert de processor de voordelen van een snelle single core processor en trage quad core CPU's. Vergeleken met snellere Core i7 mobiele CPU's heeft de 720QM slechts 6MB L3 Cache.

740QM: De Core i7 740QM is een high-end quad-core CPU voor laptops (uit 2010) met een relatief lage standaard kloksnelheid maar met hoge maximum frequentie (2,93 GHz) na het inschakelen van Turbo Boost (voor één core). Hij combineert daarmee de voordelen van een trage quad core en een snelle single core processor. Vergeleken met de snellere Core i7 mobiele CPU's heeft de 740QM maar 6MB L3 Cache.
